I actually tried that when ma mere lent me her phone for a week's trip to DC. Alas, pretty much everyone forgot once or twice and texted, which is even more expensive sans plan than going over the baby plan that I have. I suppose that's what happens when you are the only kid on the block without a smart phone. ;-)
Oh, I meant actually DISABLED. I'm sure Verizon has an option to do this, and I know several people who cannot actually receive texts at all because they have it disabled. You can't get charged if you can't receive at all. ;)
Just tell Verizon what's happening and they'll cancel the charges/reset your texts. I'm sure they'll have suggestions about what to do but consider changing your number. You shouldn't pay for the number change, though--or any charge, really.
There is no way I am changing my number--it is solely composed of 3's, 7's and numbers that are divisible by 3's, 7's, and 9's, which in my book is superhellalucky. I'll be able to borrow a vehicle tomorrow, so hopefully I can get them to purge the spam texts from my record.

I... I thought I was the only one with this kind of fixation... you should have seen my face when my id number failed to comply my 9=0 equation by one number.
Oh man, I'm not a crazily superstitious person but when I get a new phone number with a bunch of lucky numbers and combinations in it, and I'm getting a phone number in the first place because I need to apply for jobs, I am not going to switch it out for a different one!
