Oh man, that sucks. I wish I could be more helpful, but the best thing I can think of is to use some sort of file/disk recovery software. It should treat your USB card like any drive, and attempt to recover the data off it. If you can see icons, I would think it would have a good chance of getting the data back.
I don't know what the best tool is nowadays for your platform of choice. I used to use Norton Disk Doctor, but I think there are better packages now.
Not sure where you are now in your travels, but... are you still taking pictures with that memory card? If you are, stop and buy another card. Every picture you take increases the risk of writing over old data you want to recover.
