There was a piece on NPR about this recently. Or, more accurately on the tendency to immediately discard a remake as inferior, even though there is plenty of evidence that remakes/covers are frequently regarded as _the_ version.
The commentator pointed out the original piano version of Pictures at an Exhibition vs. the arrangement by Ravel that put it on the map, and Otis Redding's original version of Respect vs. when Aretha's version put it on the map forever.
