I can understand the smiley aversion- I have resisted them in the past- but if you're talking on IM a lot they become essential. Otherwise it's just too hard to judge a person's "tone" and jokes can start arguments really fast. Also, they're goofy fun, and some of them are quite expressive.. ok, I admit it, I'm hooked.
