Instant messaging has been a very indispensable part of going online nowadays. i'v always found it weird to put that busy icon on your status (even goin back to the days of ICQ. i mean, if you really don't want to be disturbed, then why are you visible? (obviously comin from someone whose contacts kno is always online but never visible)

as a person who also has himself as a YM contact, i have to tell you that the statuses you see are deceiving. what you see isn't always what other people see. but it still helps, since 95% of the time you'd be makin the right assumptions.

true. The icon, at some point, is a first line of defense - telling others not to talk to you. But once someone messages you, you have to reply coz there's no way you're online and you don't want to chat.

on the other hand, some people goes online for the sake of the "community", feeling that there are people around even if he/she's alone. Probably hoping some people would message them even if they are "busy".
