Shade of Black

Sho gulped the last drop of whiskey, the girl he had been dating for years called it quits last night. He had forgotten that they had reservation in celebration of their anniversary.

“I’m tired of this!” she yelled, while packing her things.

“I’m sorry, I promise to make it up to you,” Sho tried to plead, “You know my work is just…”

“I know that you’ve worked so hard to get where you are Sho-kun and I understand that, but sometimes I wish you can actually be in this relationship.”

“I am.”

“No, you’re not. Even when you’re with me, I felt alone. It’s like you’re heart and mind are somewhere else,” she stated with pain tangible in her voice, “good-bye Sho,” she walked out of their apartment without looking back, completely disappeared in Sho’s sight.

Sho let his head rest on the coffee table, feeling hopeless, because no matter how much he denied it there’s truth in what his ex had said. His thoughts and heart were clouded by love he refused to convey. He has been in-love with…

Sho was eating at school cafeteria one day with his cousin a year lower than him because he had forgotten to bring his bento that day. He wasn’t really fund of hanging around his younger cousin because he’s ‘younger’.

“Nino, right here,” his cousin waved at someone, Sho wasn’t particularly paying attention and he doesn’t want to meddle with his cousin’s business, especially the people he hang around with - they might be too energetic and troublesome for him.

“Sho-chan, this is my best friend Nino,” Ma-kun introduced enthusiastically.

“Hi, Sho-chan,” Nino greeted

“Hello,” Sho greeted not bothering to look at him.

“Heard you’re really a smart-ass,” Nino commented.

Sho was insulted and lifted gaze wanting to show ‘smart-ass’ he really was, but the moment he saw the mischievous smile of Nino, he made sure that he never bring his bento the rest of his high school days.

On the day of his graduation, Sho tried to confess to Nino.

“Congratulations, Sho-chan!” Nino said sincerely, handing him small box as a congratulatory gift which Sho accepted whole-heartedly, but there was sadness in his eyes.

“What’s wrong?” Sho asked worriedly, he had never seen Nino in a miserable state. Nino started crying and suddenly hugged Sho, “Come with me,” he dragged Nino in a more secluded area.

It was quite difficult to find a private place during graduation day, when everyone was taking picture in different parts of the school where they’ve hang-out once with friends. They were at the back of one of the school building; Nino took a seat on the step, still crying. Sho didn’t know what to do or say, he sat beside Nino and waited for him to compose himself and tell him what’s really going-on.

Nino took a deep breath, “We broke-up,” Nino said covering his face and started crying again.

Sho felt confused with Nino’s words, he didn’t even know that Nino was dating someone. He had always been hanging-out with him and Ma-kun all these time. Masaki? Sho tried not to think too much, he needed to hear it from Nino’s mouth.

“We’ve been dating since last summer, Aiba-chan and I” Nino’s voice crack with every words, tears still flowing but he continued, “But he found someone else, we’ve been friends more than lovers, so it didn’t cross my mind that he’ll do this to me.”

Sho was in shock, dumbfounded that the first person he fell for and his younger cousin had been dating, how could be so blind? He didn’t know where to direct his anger, to Ma-kun for hurting Nino, or Nino himself for falling in-love with someone else, or to himself for letting this happen.

“But you know, I’m still thankful that I still have you as a friend,” Nino said to Sho, smiling at him weakly.

“Yeah, you still have me,” Sho said, if Nino wanted him to be his friend that’s what he’ll be.

“It’s better to be friends,” Nino declared, and in that moment Sho sealed all the love he had for Nino.

Until today that love remained locked inside Sho’s heart, along with an everlasting friendship with Nino.

“Sho-chan, wake-up!” Sho heard the familiar nagging voice, “Get-up, you drunkard,” he felt a kick on his side.

“Nino~” Sho moaned, his head was killing him, and more so when Nino opened the curtain. Apparently he had fallen asleep last night on the floor where he was drinking, while thinking of the past.

“Here, drink this,” Nino offered him a glass of water.

“Thanks,”

“You should be,”

“How’d you know?”

“A mouse told me, you okay?”

“Not really,”

“I’m sorry, Sho-chan, but hey you still have me,”

“Yeah?”

“Of course, we’re friends,” Nino smiled, the same smile that he had the first time they’ve met in the school cafeteria. Years had passed but it felt like it was yesterday.

“Yes, we’re friends,” he gulped the water together with overflowing feelings for his friend.

-End-
