I'm not opposed to them dying, y'know? But a character like Kaneka? His death should be an entire story on its own. Not about one fifth of a pretty lousy story.
Chump-killing a brilliant politician because he was too stupid to come inside from a balcony. "Those flying monsters will never get here! This place is warded from evil spirits! I scoff at my underlings' advice to come in out of the fucking rain!"
Re-enacting the great-the-first-time climactic Angel-goes-to-hell scene with Sezaru and Angai. Except Buffy dies in this one.
Two titans of the Empire who used to be allies fight. No real dialogue to speak of, and one of them dies a fairly meaningless death.
The line “I fear death less than failing to follow bushido" was spoken by a character. I'm not editing or paraphrasing here. The writing has descended. The shark has jumped.
Is this the Gencon story? Or is it some other story? And the writers don't identify themselves anymore? Now everything's just "By the Story Team?" Is that so when we hate it, we can't single someone out?
I don't really follow L5R anymore, but the writing has always made me a little ill. It defies the law wherein masterbation levels are curbed by rates of wrist injury. Why is every story so overblown with bad melodramatic landscaping? Something is "epic" in scale when it's exceptional, out of the ordinary. L5R story used up its quota of "epic" five years ago and has been wallowing in goth-poetry territory ever since. My awe-receptors have long since burnt out and all that's left is to roll my eyes.

Bayushi Kaukatsu also dies, simply because he's too dumb to go inside. It's like Ree all over again, except possibly worse.
