You know how there are things you'd say to one person that you would never ever in a million years say in front of another? It's really super awkward when the other person overhears you saying them.

Just act as though you were really busy after work that night around your boss. An extra "Thank you for being so understanding last night" may help as well. It's a lie, but if you feign as though you had super important plans that it was clashing with, they would more than likely understand :)
