I do wonder if adding one male cat to the mix might tamp down the all-girl bitch politics among the feline population.

crapshoot IME. they might just as easily add their own politics on top. in our current batch (4 female 2 male) there would be relatively little bitchiness if we'd remove the males; most of the aggressive fractiousness is caused by them. both the cat who gets along best with all others and the one who gets along least are female (though she isn't aggressively bitchy, just defensively, she doesn't like most other cats close to her). it's always seemed much less a sex than a personality issue to me in general.

I agree that adding a male would just add complications.

But I'm amused at this because when he was at UC Santa Cruz, my friend Gregor knew a human couple named Spike and Tinka.

Since I find 'Tinka' a bit embarrassingly twee, even on a cat, I am boggled by the notion of a biped living with it. Wonders unceasing.

Your "a case of nocturnal cats" made me giggle. Nice turn of phrase.

Thanks! It amused me to think of it, so it's nice it works for others as well...
