They had left the dorm together and taken the train over to Port Island Station, where there was a nice cafe and a movie theatre, which apparently was playing only Christmas movies tonight. Akihiko saw the lineup and frowned, wondering if Mitsuru were really likely to want to see a Christmas movie double feature ( Read more... )

Akihiko was dressed in his winter jacket and scarf, too, and he thought she looked really nice in hers. Their breath steamed in the cold, though, and he started heading for the restaurant across the plaza from the theatre.

"It's freezing out here," he lamented, glancing sidelong at her. Then realized that it was probably not setting the right mood to be complaining. "But the lights are nice, huh?" he added lamely, gesturing up at the christmas decorations that hung over the plaza.

"They are," she agreed, looking up at them as she fell into step beside him, adding, "It almost makes up for the temperature. I thought it rarely got this cold until January." She saw nothing particularly wrong with talking about the temperature; it was cold out, after all.

"I guess it's just a cold year," Akihiko said. "But the restaurant is warm, at least," he added with a smile as they stepped inside. A waiter showed them to a table, and Akihiko mentally counted up his bank account nervously before he remembered that he still had all of that money from when he'd sold some off-world items from his last hunting trip with Edge.

They sat down and Akihiko looked at his menu for a moment, then looked up. "I uh...have something for you," he said awkwardly, fingering the box in his pocket. Maybe it would be best to get this over with, so it'd stop burning a hole in his pants and making him feel like he should say something.

Mitsuru was used to this sort of restaurant, and shed her coat comfortably when they reached the table, hanging it over the back of her chair and smoothing her skirt serenely as she sat down.

"Ah-- you do?" she replied, a little surprised. "I'm sorry, I left my present for you at home, I thought that we all agreed to exchange gifts on Christmas morning..."
