Huzzah, stuff happening! I really like the idea that Joe is kind of like Doctor Who's River Song here, knowing the future but unable to tell the others too much in order to preserve the time stream.

...or did I completely misread that because tired?

Nah, that's about right! Only it's less to preserve the time stream and more because the last time he screwed around with it he ended up dead. Not an experience one cares to repeat. :3
