~ Chapter 04 ~
It was only the other day that I told you to be careful and keep yourselves from getting sick, wasn't it? My, oh my, I should have reminded myself too. It comes and goes, this flu season, and you'll never know when or how you catch some. Oh dear... I just hope you're not too disturbed if I keep coughing and sneezing throughout the story.
Now, let's do our best to stay awake until the story is finished for today, shall we?
Today, I suppose it will be best if I begin with telling you a little about the witch Miyavi. Ah yes... Don't we all remember him? Evil as he may seem, his role was important, as he happened to be the witch who had placed a curse upon our dearest Prince Uruha.
Before we go too far, though, I have to explain to you a small, but rather important fact. It might confuse you in some way, because we will find that the witch Miyavi-despite all the years he had gone through-hadn't changed a bit in his physical appearance. Yes, that's true, sweetie. Mind the fact that he was a witch; he had hundreds of copies of spell books that contained many ways for him to preserve his youth, so although his looks might tell you that he was probably in his twentieth, he was actually much, much older than that.
How old was he, truthfully?
I'd love to answer that, but I still want to live the rest of my life in the form of a human being instead of a lizard, thank you very much. Let's just hope Miyavi isn't listening to me right now...
You must've been questioning, where the witch had been all this time, why he hadn't made an appearance in the life of our young Prince. Where could the witch live, and why there hadn't been any news whatsoever about him? Could it be that he actually had been waiting for the perfect moment to pop out from his hiding and then perform one of his evil spells towards people who dared to defy him?
Well, no. I hate to break your hopes but no, Miyavi hadn't been hiding at all, and he hadn't even been thinking about doing anything as such that would put him through the slightest fuss. He was that sort of a person, you see, a person who never liked anything complicated and his thoughts were of simple matters of 'likes' and 'dislikes'. That time when he had come barging in through the doors of the Great Hall and attacked the royal family and laid a curse upon our Prince, that was all because he didn't like being left out-which the King hadn't exactly done to him in purpose. There really hadn't been too many people (or fairies) invited to the event, and Miyavi the witch just happened to be one of those who hadn't been in the list. That had made the witch feel like he had been forgotten, or that people underestimated him, and he certainly did not like that. The rest was history, as we all know it, and the harm had been done.
Where had the witch been, then?
First of all, he hadn't been hiding. Miyavi the witch had a castle up on a hill, and for people to find it would be one of the hardest tasks to be done in the world. The road that led to the castle was not a road commonly used by people; it went through a thick, dark, most likely dangerous forest, which, as the rumor had it, was filled with unknown beasts and swamps and plenty other life-threatening obstacles. The witch didn't have to go through this forest in order to go home or to leave his castle in case he needed to do something elsewhere, of course, he could fly or simply zap himself to wherever it was he wanted to be. But for normal people who didn't have magical powers, it was like wasting their lives to walk through such path, and for what? Why would people be interested in getting involved with a self-centered witch like Miyavi, who most definitely likely would just turn them into frogs once they set foot on his castle because they had been disturbing him?
Up there in the tall tower of his castle, Miyavi liked to sit in front of a cauldron which content was of a purplish liquid. It was a potion that allowed a witch to observe the surrounding without having to cross the distance; this was some sort of a greatly complicated witchcraft that required very rare toxic materials and odd passages of spells, but Miyavi, I must tell you, was one of the most highly skilled witches at that time. Rather than stepping outside his comfortable home, he could just brew the potion in his potion-room and then bring it somewhere near a window and then cast his spell and, there you go, he had the world in his view. This was exactly how he had found out the small merriment at the King's castle and the fact that he wasn't invited in it.
It wasn't that it had never come into Miyavi's thoughts, how the little Prince had been doing all these years, how he had grown up and the friends that he had met. From the surface of the liquid in his cauldron he could see everything, and what he saw lately didn't impress him much. And what could that be, you ask? Well, it was rather who than what... we all do remember about who Prince Uruha had met recently, don't we? Yes, my dear, you're absolutely right; it was the one and only, Prince Aoi.
Prince Aoi with his grace and beauty had not only charmed our beloved Prince Uruha but also many, many people who had simply laid eyes on him, and that included the witch Miyavi. Oh yes, my dear, it was once in an autumn several years ago that the witch had had the chance to meet Prince Aoi, and it was at a dinner that his father the King had held. Miyavi had been invited, back then, and ever since he saw Prince Aoi he had never been able to forget him. There, at the side of his father, the young Prince put just about everybody in awe when he smiled and entranced whomever he spoke to with his words. And yes, again, that included the witch Miyavi.
Shortly, Miyavi had discovered Prince Uruha's meeting with Prince Aoi, and to know how the two had gotten so close lately did not make him happy. At the sight of Prince Aoi and Prince Uruha together, Miyavi practically tossed his cauldron with fury, causing the liquid to spill to his floor and the Witch to think of various plans to get rid of Prince Uruha. Yes, unfortunately, my dear, Prince Uruha had long resided in the Witch's list of people he disliked, and his closeness with Prince Aoi gave the Witch all the more reason to hate him. The sooner he acted the better, Miyavi thought, that once Prince Uruha was gone, Prince Aoi would not be thinking about him anymore and maybe the witch could have the chance to draw the raven haired Prince closer to him.
Why yes, dear; it certainly was jealousy. What had come up in Miyavi's thought at that time was: how could Prince Uruha have just about all the things that he wanted? A wonderful life in the castle, a loving family and a circle of friends, even Prince Aoi...
As the story goes, that morning, Miyavi sat and remembered about the curse he once put upon Prince Uruha. He smiled although he knew about the efforts that had been done as to prevent the curse from happening. You do remember what the curse said, don't you? It said: Prince Uruha was to die (or to sleep for many, many years-according to the fairy who had alleviated the curse) at the prick of a rose's thorn on his skin. From the day Prince Uruha was cursed, his father had ordered every single human being (and fairies as well) in the kingdom to get rid of roses-of any kinds-until there was not one single plant left. As a result, the whole kingdom had never seen roses for years, and if we bothered asking the young children that was born during the span of those years, they would not be able to tell you how a rose plant looked like.
"Nothing that that silly fool of a King did would be able to undo my curse," Miyavi said to himself; a wide, devious smile adorning his face.
Quite coincidentally, that day was the last day Prince Uruha being a sixteen year old boy, because the day afterwards it was his birthday. Yes, yes... it was mentioned in the curse that Prince Uruha was never going to see the sun rose at his seventeenth birthday.
Carefully, Miyavi planned out everything that he was going to set out to do that day, and as the sun slanted eastward he put on his colorful robe and muttered a spell; a little bat appeared from the clouds that the witch had disappeared into, and it flew out of the window, heading towards the castle where Prince Uruha lived.
Oh dear, oh dear, the tension... What would become of our lovely Prince?
In the meantime, it was only an hour or so after lunch when our Prince was taking a walk in the castle with his best friend, Reita, and the fairy, Ruki.
Ah yes… ever since that incident that had brought the three to meet the little fairy had never been too far apart from Prince Uruha and Reita. More than just being indebted towards Reita who had saved him from taking the form of a frog for eternity, Ruki felt he had found great friends. As a fairy, it was a rare chance to be finding a human being worth of his friendship and loyalty, but as time went by, Ruki had discovered the sincerity and good manners of the two and it was all enough to make him feel honored to be their friend.
Well. To be honest, it was Reita that Ruki was closer to; for only a miraculous fate could ever decide, the extravagant personality of the fairy seemed to fit well with Reita's calm and thoughtful manners. Rarely did the red-haired fairy find any one-human or fairy-who would sit still long enough to listen to everything that he had to say, uncomplainingly, and bear with his attitude. Not that Ruki was ill-mannered or anything, but as a royal blooded fairy, he was quite proud of himself and, without him planning it to, sometimes his pride made the others around him feel disturbed in one way or another. But not Reita; the young boy seemed to be able to deal with him no matter what mood he was in, and when that proud self re-surfaced from within the fairy, Reita would just smile and nod, as if approving whatever Ruki thought of himself. Thus, for all the reasons that were and even more, the fairy and the boy became very close. I dare say, yes, just as close as Prince Uruha and Prince Aoi were... or maybe even closer.
Anyhow, it now became quite a common sight to see a fairy with silver, purple-blue-dotted wings trailing alongside the two old time friends. And that particular afternoon, the three friends were just taking a walk within the castle, exploring places they rarely visited, sharing light conversations and jokes along the way. You see, it was a grand, grand castle and even though the Prince had lived there for his whole life he still wasn't familiar with some places, especially parts of the castle that were far and hard to reach from the main section-and that would be where the Great Hall and the rooms where the royal family inhabited were situated. This time, they traveled westward from the main section, heading towards the old chamber, and on each side of this chamber there were doors that led to some rooms. These were the rooms where the Prince's father kept his collections of old, used armories, memorable items he received from his companions-fellow kings and/or noble people-and other antiquities. Besides the maids and the people that were appointed to take care of these rooms, hardly anyone ever visited them, not even the King and other royal family members. Well, they would, but only occasionally, and even Prince Uruha had only been there once, and that was when he was still a very young boy.
The chamber was actually the lowest part of the main tower which peak was the highest site of the whole island. At the further end of the chamber there was a huge spiral staircase that led up the tower, but whatever lied at the topmost of the stairs, Prince Uruha never knew. Other than the fact that it was such a long way up and no normal human being could climb to the top in one go, his father had once warned him that he wasn't allowed to go up there, not for any reason.
Reaching the stairs, Prince Uruha looked up to where the staircase turned and ended in his view. "I wonder where these stairs end..." he mumbled.
"But isn't it a very long way up there?" Reita questioned, "I don't think it's possible for us to reach the top without exhausting ourselves."
The fairy shook his head with a smirk on his face. "Reita, my dear, you forgot that there's a fairy here," Ruki said, boasting his chest, "With a flick of my wand I can take you both up there without sweat."
Based on the boys' (and the fairy's) curiosity, thus it was decided. Ruki was going to use his magic to transport the boys up to the end of the staircase, and he did it as easy as swinging his wand: a silver light came out of the end of the stick and it covered both Prince Uruha and Reita, enfolding them in a shroud of silver, and in the next second, they disappeared.
Oh yes! The wonders of fairies! Don't we all wish we have a fairy friend too?
Shortly after, Prince Uruha and Reita found themselves in front of a large wooden door that had beautiful carvings on its surface; the door was slightly opened and looking at it, it instantly made both of the boys curious. Walking before Reita, Prince Uruha moved to open the door wider, wanting to see what was hidden behind it. And once they entered the room behind the door, they were amazed by what they saw.
The room itself was nothing of the extraordinary: a fairly large room with stone walls, lit with the sunshine from outside that went through the window on one side of the wall, and besides a wooden table and a chair at the far end of the room, there were no other furniture there to be found. It wasn’t these simple arrangements of items that put the boys in awe, but what was decorating the walls: it was some sort of a plant that neither of them had ever seen before. Green branches with green leafs grew into beautifully full buds of blood-red flower, layers and layers of petals was each of them made of, covering all sides of the walls.
Taking further steps into the room, the boys lurked around in half-wonder, half-confusion. They thought as hard as they could but they kept coming to a conclusion that never in their lives that they had seen such a beautiful flower. The castle’s garden was filled with so many varieties of flowers from around the world, but not one resembled to this flower they were currently looking at. Prince Uruha wondered about so many possibilities; could it be that his father thought that this certain flower was much too precious that it should not be planted down there at the garden where random people might just ruin it? Could it be that this flower should always be kept at a room like this where it was safely protected?
So deeply enchanted by the flower’s beauty, neither of them noticed a black bat hanging upside down up on the corner of the ceiling, watching them intently. Oh dear… Can you guess what-or rather, who the bat could be?
Drawn by his curiosity and amazement, Prince Uruha walked even closer. He wanted to see the flower up close, so he reached one hand forward and tried to touch the flower. But… alas! The poor Prince did not have the chance to admire the flower any further, because when his finger accidentally touched a thorn and got pricked with it, the Prince fell unconscious and dropped to the floor where he then laid unmoving. It was as if in one second a candle was lit and in the next second someone blew it off.
“Prince! Prince Uruha!!” Our beloved Reita panicked as he witnessed what happened. Never had he expected that the Prince would suddenly fall to the floor like that, and quite confusing indeed because for all Reita knew, Prince Uruha was healthy and there was no sign of him being ill. How could such a healthy person faint so easily?
We all know what really went on, sadly. Yes; the curse of the envious Witch had just come to life. Prince Uruha, as what had been foreseen by Miyavi the Witch, had just fallen into a very deep sleep that nothing could ever be done to wake him up, save for the conditions mentioned in the curse.
A sudden blast of sound was heard: a black puff of smoke appeared, and from it, appeared a figure that was wearing a colorful robe and underneath the robe his outfit looked even more colorful. He was laughing; his high-pitched voice echoed against the walls.
Oh yes, dear… It was-the one and only-Miyavi the Witch.
“Finally!” he said between his laughter, “My curse has been fulfilled! Sleep, Prince Uruha, sleep for a million years and until the world rots away, you shall stay within your eternal sleep!!”
In that exact moment, another puff of smoke-this time it was silver-popped up and the fairy Ruki appeared. He groaned when he saw Prince Uruha lying unmoving on the floor and when he saw who was there he pulled out his wand in a speed of light.
Aiming the tip at the Witch, Ruki said angrily: “Evil witch! So unforgivable what you have done to the Prince, I shall punish you!!”
Unfortunately, very unfortunately, Ruki muttered his spell all too late. The Witch laughed one more time before he swished and turned right back into a black bat, and in that form he flew right out of the window. Ruki’s desperate screaming of spells and random flashes of silver light followed the Witch’s disappearance but none of it did any damage towards the enemy, and before too long, there was no trace of the Witch to be aimed with a spell anymore.
Reita, in the mean time, watched all this with extreme horror. What had just happened? He didn’t understand any of it; all the while he just held the Prince tightly in his hold, trying to wake him up in all ways he could think of. But of course, nothing that he did could wake the Prince; Prince Uruha was still so deeply asleep. He was lying completely still and besides the soft movement of his chest, nothing else signified that he was alive.
“Forgive me, my dear Reita,” said Ruki who had approached the spot where Reita was holding Prince Uruha, “I have come too late and now the unspeakable has taken place. I should’ve been there to protect you, my friends. I failed. Therefore I swear I will do whatever I could to uplift the Witch’s curse, and if that means I have to go do a dangerous deed then I will do it. For now, let’s take the Prince to his room and let his parents know what had happened…”
Sad; a sad thing indeed what had happened, my dear friends… The curse had truly come true, and now, what could be done to undo it? If no one could come up with an idea, then the Prince would sleep forever and never wake up again…
Forgive me because I have to end the chapter here. Please do not worry so much… and let’s just pray that our dear Prince Uruha will wake up again.
Sleep well, my lovelies. We will see each other again soon.
