Reita repeated the end of the chorus, his bass part, peering aside to the awaiting Kai. "Like that?" he asked, hoping that he had done it correctly this time. It could get quite frustrating when he had to do one part repeatedly over and over again and still not getting a satisfying response. Kai could be one of the most patient person on the face of the earth even when people (including Reita...) bullied him, but when it came to band's business, Kai was a strict one and he could even be harsh, making him a very respectable person in the matter and there was rarely anyone who would dare facing Kai and argue with him at the specific moment. This time it was Reita's turn to get his share of the snaggy Kai. He couldn't complain, though. It was one of the things he liked about Kai, that professionalism that he could always maintain, no matter what the situation was, and it was the exact reason that had put Kai in his present position as the band's leader. Well, that, and the fact that Kai just talked too much that made him a perfect spokesperson for the band...
God only knew where The GazettE might've been at this point if they had appointed Reita as the band leader back then...
"I think it should be... A little slower on the tempo," Kai said, and Reita was already half-expecting that the drummer would complain again, "Like..." He stepped on the pedal, his bass drum pounding, giving Reita an example of the kind of tempo that he meant, "That. Ne, Uruha-kun?"
The person whom Kai had just addressed, the man sitting on the floor and leaning his back on the wall, looked up at both of them. "Yeah, I think it's like that," he replied, "Do it together, both of you, otherwise Reita would be lost for eternity." Uruha giggled at the end of his comment, looking quite amused at how Kai had been scolding Reita the whole morning just for that one particular part.
Reita breathed desperately. He was the first person whom Uruha had taught about this song, and Uruha wasn't complaining at all when they played together, but now that Kai had tagged along, it seemed that everything that he had done was wrong. "Okay, okay," Kai grinned, preparing to hit his drums, looking intently at Reita, "From the beginning of the chorus. Ready?"
Reita nodded, his fingers gripping the strings of his bass. "Give it a go."
Kai tapped his sticks together, giving a signal, and Reita strummed his bass along when the rhythm started. They played through the chorus and soon nearing the end of it. "And..." Kai noted, "Like... That!" And the chorus ended.
"See? That worked just fine. You just love torturing Reita, don't you, Kai?" Uruha giggled again.
"Yes," Kai answered, a bigger grin stretched on his face, "I can't let him have all the fun of bullying me. A relationship goes both ways, ne, Rei-chan?" His blinking eyes went straight at Reita's while Reita peered back, eyes narrowing, but his heart was pounding faster. He knew that Kai was implying about something that had occurred... Last night... At Kai's place. Kai was denoting about the two of them, about a scene that involved the two of them, on the sofa... Him kissing Kai, Kai kissing him back...
As Reita looked deep into those eyes, he could see the little sparkles of laughter in them, indicating that Kai had noticed the change on his face, and damn it, Reita had never been good in the matter of hiding his feelings.
The voice of the producer from outside the studio startled Reita, puffing away all the images that were starting to fill up his brain again. Reita turned his head to look at the man outside, standing beside the arranger, hoping Kai would just miss the sight of him blushing. "Okay, now, are you two ready to record your parts?" the producer asked.
Kai answered immediately, "Yes!", lifting his hands that were holding the sticks, smiling wide. Reita nodded too to answer.
"I'm out, then..." Uruha stood up, grinning at both Kai and Reita, "Good luck, you two." The guitarist soon joined the producer and arranger outside the glass window to observe his new song being recorded.

Reita let out a long sigh as he stepped out of the studio, couldn't help feeling relieved now that the first take was done. It wasn't bad, but somehow he felt like there was still something missing, something not right. Maybe it was that ending part, he wasn't sure that that was how the ending supposed to be. He hadn't felt like it was wrong when he was playing it inside the studio, but after he had listened to the recording, it just didn't feel right. But to see that Uruha, the writer of the song himself hadn't been complaining at all about it, Reita kept quiet. He didn't feel like arguing too much at the moment, and was content enough to leave it like that, and until Uruha left the room with the arranger and the producer he still didn't say anything.
We'll get to that. I just need to figure out what exactly is wrong about it...
"You shouldn't sigh like that."
That comment plus an arm slinging around his shoulder nearly made Reita jump off his shoes. He turned to find Kai grinning at him. "You're letting one happiness fly away from you with that sigh," Kai continued, "So people said... Haven't you heard about that?"
Reita could feel his heart beating against his chest when he looked at that smile. "You know I'm not superstitious, Kai," he replied.
Kai shrugged, but not letting go of Reita's shoulder. "Some are true, you can't deny that."
It's not exactly the kind of conversation that would make anyone have butterflies in their stomach, but it seemed that the rules weren't working for Reita at the moment, because his stomach did feel tingly. The next thing he knew, Kai could be talking about making apple pies and Reita would be stuck in front of him, thinking that apple pies could taste quite sexy when they were served in some kinky ways Reita could only imagine of. Not that he was thinking anything kinky with Kai!!!
"You know," Reita started, evicting those improper thoughts out of his brain, "After being that rude to me during the take, the least you can do is buy me a drink."
Kai giggled as he led them both towards the door, but he was not arguing with the request Reita had made, and Reita's hand was just about to reach the door handle when the door swung open abruptly, almost hitting both Reita and Kai on their faces if they hadn't stepped back in a hurry. Reita could've just yelled at whoever it was making such a rude entrance without a single warning, at least a knock on the door, if he weren't suddenly presented with a terrible sight of... Ruki. The vocalist walked in with such a face that made Reita forget about whatever sort of anger he had ever had.
"Ruki?" he greeted, quite confused looking at how pale and disheveled the man in front of him was. He looked as if he just wore the first t-shirt he had seen when he opened the closet and his hair was hidden under a hat, but Reita could just see the tips of it curling out in a mess. And worse, Ruki seemed to have forgotten about his sunglasses. Be it he was late waking up in the morning and he had to rush it, or in any other informal occasions, Ruki would never forget about his sunglasses.
"I'm... I'm sorry to be so late..." Ruki breathed. By the sound (and the looks) of him, he seemed to have runned his way from the parking lot, if not from Aoi's place.
"That's okay, Ruki-kun," Kai answered, "It won't be vocal take until the day after tomorrow, you know that."
"But still..." Ruki looked at them, "I should come."
Reita stole a second to peer at the clock. Hmm... Ruki was two hours late, and if he hadn't known Ruki for so long now, he wouldn't think that it was weird. Reita had once been late for three hours because he forgot just what time the recording was... "What's the matter, Ru?" he asked, somehow having the ugly, but yet familiar apprehension creeping up from his belly.
"No, just... I just woke up late, that's all," Ruki answered. Call Reita nosy, but he definitely had noticed that stutter and the way Ruki shot his eyes elsewhere when he was answering Reita. It was a clear sign that Ruki was hiding something.
Reita was a little afraid to ask this next question, but he needed to, "Where's Aoi?"
At that specific question, Ruki went a few degrees paler (if it was even possible) and Reita knew instantly that there was something going on between the two. "He..." Ruki's eyes were wide as they stared at Reita, "He hasn't come yet? He's not here?" He frowned when he rolled his eyes to check the studio only to find that it was empty save for Reita and Kai.
So Reita was right. Sometimes he hated to be right all the time, but when it came to his friends, oddly, his premonitions were constantly correct. "No, Ruki," Reita said solemnly, "Aoi isn't here." He would be expecting Aoi to show up with Ruki because that seemed to be the most proper thing, since they both were living in the same apartment, beyond the fact that they were both lovers. But now that Ruki had shown up alone... And being completely oblivious about Aoi's whereabouts... He peered aside at Kai, who looked so worried his face was almost as pale as Ruki. Reita knew Kai was holding back not to say anything at the moment, and he knew it was wise. Ruki looked sick enough to be getting another bothersome comment or question.
"I... I thought..." the vocalist looked at Reita, his eyes glowed with something like confusion, "I thought he had left earlier and... I..." At that point, Ruki was lost for more words, and his explanation was hung unfinished. He bent down, suddenly looking absolutely tired, sinking to the floor and became such a pathetic sight that Reita just had to come down there and pull him into a hug.
"Hey..." Reita murmured, shifting sight back and forth from the man in his hold and Kai. Kai just stood there, biting his lower lip, gazing at Reita with probably the same amount of worry as Reita had in his eyes. Without him saying it out loud, Reita knew just what the drummer was thinking. "Hey, Ruki, it's okay..."
It was just a miracle if he had ever succeeded when it came to calming people down, and Ruki, instead of calming down in Reita's hold, had only broken to pieces and started stuttering. "I... I couldn't find him when I woke up... I thought he had gone to the studio... So I took a cab and..." Ruki lifted his head, and Reita could feel a pinch in his heart when he saw Ruki's eyes were glimmering with tears. "Where is he, Reita...?" Ruki asked, his voice soft and sounded distressed, but sadly, Reita hadn't had the answer.
He pulled Ruki deeper onto his chest, feeling how his friend started to tremble and he knew without looking at Ruki's face, he was more than desperate as he started to sob uncontrollably. What had gone wrong with them, with Aoi and Ruki? The other day, that last time Reita had met them during the photoshoot, they looked just fine. He could even conclude that Ruki was extremely happy back then. What might've happened in just a couple of days? Reita, knowing Ruki like his own brother, knew it very well that Ruki wouldn't be crying like this in front of others when there wasn't anything absolutely horrible that had happened.
Had Aoi hurt him?
That thought scared Reita, but to think again just what sort of a person Aoi was... No, he couldn't have done that. He could never have done that. Not to mention the kind of love Aoi had had for Ruki... It was almost impossible to think that Aoi might've hurt Ruki to the point of making him cry like this, if not unintentionally.
Had this anything to do with... Uruha?
It was a probability that would always be there, no matter how long the matter had passed. And it all had one primary source: Aoi and his rage.
"Ruki... Ruki, it's okay..." Reita just kept mumbling the same words over and over again, although he knew it was useless, because Ruki only kept sobbing for minutes. But he knew he couldn't do anything else right now, he could only be here for Ruki, even only to be a shoulder to cry on.
