Hanabi : 17
Reita had just passed the park, and he insisted to keep his gaze forward on the street ahead of him, trying not to spare the smallest bit of his attention to the noises coming from that park. It's Saturday night, it's a bright and warm Saturday night, and damn it... Reita should've been more considerate and picked the other way. Having his mind completely unfocused, he had forgotten about this fact... If he had picked the other way, the path that went around the complex but far enough from the park, it would have been a long detour and it would take him longer to reach his destination, but it was so much better than to pass the park where most couples in the neighbourhood would go to spend their Saturday night. At this time, most parents wouldn't let their underage children go anywhere near this place.
Some of the noises were pretty disturbing...
Reita shook his head, and tried to focus on pedaling his bike. Sometimes he wondered, though, what exactly were the things a couple did when they went out on a... Date...? No, Reita had never gone on a date. Ever. He had never had a girlfriend, and by far, he never really intended to find one. To think that he was the worst in the world when it came to having a conversation with the opposite sex, save his mother and his sister. If he couldn't even talk properly, then... What would he do with a... A girlfriend...?
Reita shuddered but he was sure it wasn't because of the wind blowing against him.
And how had he been spending his Saturday nights? Well, even without a girlfriend... Ruki would most likely be there to keep him more than fully preoccupied.
It's not that it wasn't fun... He admitted, it was weird that he had only realized it now. Those Saturday nights when Ruki would stay in Reita's place, they were actually... Fun. Ruki was always so vibrant and extendedly cheerful when weekends came, because that was the only time when he was allowed to stay overnight in Reita's place, save for 'emergency conditions'. Recalling how it was in Ruki's home, Reita knew his house and his family were the utmost getaway Ruki could've thought of. Reita didn't mind, honestly, and it had become some sort of a habit that he would come home every Saturday afternoon carrying a Chibi on his back, clinging happily. His mother and Nee-chan were so very welcoming, and they simply loved the little brat for cheering up the house.
And even if having Ruki around would leave Reita the whole night of trying to deprive Ruki's evil hands away from him and yelling at him to go to sleep, it was so much more better than spending it alone... Just like tonight. God... How he really wished Ruki weren't angry at him right now...
Great. Not another thought of Ruki...
Those flashes of thoughts became some sort of a cue for Reita to pedal his bike a little faster, hoping that the gush of wind against his face would help him forget about the fight that still hadn't cooled down between him and Ruki. Sadly to say, it had been four days already, and Ruki was still keen on dashing off and out of Reita's sight whenever Reita came any closer to him. It hurt, but Reita knew it would hurt even more to push his luck, to try to talk to Ruki. He would just get another rejection, Ruki would turn right away and ignore Reita, and that sucked.
He had not the slightest idea how Ruki managed to keep up his persistence of not talking to Reita, remembering how he was so clingy to Reita before the fight, and there was rarely a day when Ruki would not talk to Reita. He seemed to have so many things to say, and Reita had been so used of being Ruki's listener (although he might've passed more than half of what Ruki was telling him, his mind wandering elsewhere). So now, not having his chirpy voice around Reita... It felt, sad to admit, very quiet and very lonesome.
Reita had passed the park but the mini-market was still a block away and all he wanted at the moment was to get his job finished as soon as possible. Why wouldn't anyone build a mini-market closer to where he lived? And why did his sister need a bottle of milk at this time of the night, and why didn't she go and buy it for herself?? Some reason she made up, she had to study for a test so she had to ask Reita for help. Tomorrow was Sunday, for God's sakes! She still could study tomorrow night.
Reita couldn't help from mumbling some complain, although no one was there to hear him.
He breathed relievedly when he finally caught the sight of his destination. The light from the mini-market blazed through the night, and Reita huffed as he stepped off his bike, parking it beside a lamp pole and chained it securely. People said that there was a bike stolen around here a few days ago, and Reita most likely would not want that to happen to him too, and he was definitely not in the mood to walk home at this time of an hour. He walked with quick, long steps towards the market's entrance. He rushed right towards the beverage section, passing the vegetables section--and stopped shortly at the surprising sight of someone very familiar.
"Baa--" Reita cut off his own sentence before completing it when he saw someone else at Kai-Baa-chan's side. EH? Okay... She was definitely beyond Reita's wildest guess to be seeing tonight, and especially, with Baa-chan... Not just surprised, he had never even acknowledged that they both knew each other. "Baa-chan?" Reita called, finally, trying not to look too curious about her whereabouts at the moment, but he couldn't stop his eyes from staring at her either. Her long, straight hair was pulled up to a bun on the back of her head, and she was wearing a pastel purple sweater perfectly paired with a maroon skirt. Stunning, as always, and more, if Reita had to admit. Without her formal working outfit and her glasses, she looked very very beautiful.
Kai-Baa-chan turned right around, his face was clearly surprised when he met Reita. "Reita-chan?" he greeted in almost the same questioning tone like Reita used. Reita couldn't help recognizing the blush on both Kai-Baa-chan's cheeks.
"Hayama-san," Reita bowed, knowing he blushed as well when the woman he addressed to smiled at him.
"Ah, Suzuki-kun, I presume," she greeted politely, bowing.
Reita was quite pleased that she remembered him, when in fact they had only met once, that day when he went to check out on Ruki in the Med-Room. "Alone?" she asked. "You're not with little Matsumoto-kun?"
Reita thought his chest just constricted and pressed his heart almost painfully. He shook his head to answer Hayama-san's question. "No," he mumbled.
"Ah, I'm sorry... You two are having a fight, aren't you?" she commented. She sounded too blunt that Reita blushed even worse, but nodded anyways. He stared at his feet for a while before a hand came to rest on his shoulder. Lifting up his head, Reita met Baa-chan's solemn pair of eyes. "Reita-chan... What happened?" he asked, and Reita knew his chest constricted even tighter.
"It was nothing..." Reita mumbled, averting his gaze. Nothing? If it was nothing, he wouldn't be feeling this miserable at the moment...
"Reita-chan, I saw Rukicchi the other day and..." Baa-chan breathed in. "I saw his face. But he wouldn't tell me anything."
"It wasn't me!" Reita snarled, the tone in Baa-chan's voice sounded like he was blaming Reita for those bruises on Ruki's face. Yes, Baa-chan was obviously pointing out to that certain fact, even if he hadn't mentioned it clearly.
"No, I know it wasn't you. I know you won't ever hurt Rukicchi," Baa-chan held his shoulder tightly, his eyes glowed with his concern. "But has he talked to you? Has he told you anything about it?"
Reita shook his head, still glaring at Kai-Baa-chan. "No, he won't even spare me a second to talk. He won't even look at me. I just wish he would... Talk about what happened..." his voice, unavoidably, softened at the end. There came his helplessness once again, he felt it surfacing, the fragile part of him that was wishing he hadn't done that mistake that had caused him this misery.
"What... What made him angry at you, Reita-chan? I've never seen him so agitated," Baa-chan questioned again, a bit more careful with how he talked now.
Reita couldn't help recalling that night, his birthday, the decoration, the cake... "I ruined my own birthday party," he answered. "The birthday party Ruki had prepared for me." Reita could see how Baa-chan shifted his eyes towards Hayama-san, they both silently looking at one another, before Baa-chan turned right back to Reita. "I..." Reita stuttered. "I didn't even remember that it was... My birthday. And... I came home late. I didn't... I didn't expect..."
"Now, now," Baa-chan patted his shoulder. "It'll be okay..." Ah... Baa-chan just sounded like his mother, Reita thought. Like her, he also had that look in his eyes that was trying to convince Reita that it was going to be okay, that Ruki would forgive him and he'd come back to him... But by far, he hadn't seen any sort of good signs coming his way. "Let me see if I could talk to Rukicchi," Baa-chan said. "Maybe he'll be nice enough to tell me some details. I'm just afraid..." he sighed, "That maybe... Rukicchi just went through troubles with his father again. At first I thought you'd know what happened, since he only talks to you..."
Reita's gaze fell once more to his feet. It was the very same guess that he had the other day when he first saw Ruki with all the bruises on his face. The thought scared Reita so badly, it hung inside his brain and wouldn't just go away, and it felt even worse because he couldn't talk to Ruki and ask him what exactly had happened. He tried averting his thoughts to some other possible occurances, but this particular guess... It was the most probable thing. Ruki's temperamental father and a good amount of alcohol... The mixture of both had caused Ruki almost similar bruises even in the past. Reita just couldn't stop wondering, why was Ruki's father treating Ruki like that? He didn't treat Ruki's brother that rude... It had always been Ruki, as if Ruki was his target whenever he felt like letting out his anger, his frustration. Poor Ruki couldn't even ask his mother for help, knowing she was too weak and too helpless to help him, she would only cry whenever it started again... That abuse...
He kept his gaze downwards while Baa-chan spoke quietly with Hayama-san.
Back then... Back then when the same thing happened, Ruki had Reita. Ruki would always go to Reita, and made him a place to lean his head and cry. Reita couldn't turn away even if it was the most painful thing to see in his life; how little Ruki would crumble apart in his hold, how those bruises marred Ruki's face, and how Ruki cried... It always hurt Reita deep inside that he wished he could just steal Ruki away from that house, from his own family so Ruki would be far, far away from his nightmares. If he were asked, he would give up everything freely if that was really what it took to erase that pain in Ruki's eyes. But even if he had everything to give away right now, there was no way that Reita could help Ruki, not when Ruki wouldn't even come close to him.
Reita shifted, finally. "I'm... I'm gonna go and... Get my sister's order," he mumbled, not looking at both Baa-chan and Hayama-san. "So... Um..."
"Yes, yes, Reita-chan, I'm sorry to have held you," Baa-chan nodded understandingly.
"Um... Bye, then..." Reita bowed lightly before he parted with the two, not waiting for anyone to reply, walking rushedly towards the beverage section where he was heading before. His stomach felt so painful, and he knew it had nothing to do with the dinner he ate.
