Okay, chapter 13~
Hanabi : 13
Reita couldn’t have been more paranoid when he had thought that he would have to spend such a beautifully bright Sunday morning staying indoors, under the roof of the antique inn, wasting the day away to stare at the lame wooden walls of the alleys or the old tatami or the ancient shodo sheets hung on some of the walls of the inn. Aoi-jii-chan's inn had always brought Reita a weird feeling; it felt as though he had been dragged to a past that was way before his time, a past that maybe Reita's grandmother would be familiar with. Jii-chan was content to keep the atmosphere exactly as it had been when his grandparents had owned the place, and now that it had been passed down to him, he had barely made any changes; there were, of course, some modern elements that had been added out of necessity like a TV in the lobby.
Atleast Reita didn’t think there were TVs back in Jii-chan's grandparents' era...
No, Reita was neither looking at the wooden walls that must have been more than twenty years old nor at the plain shodo whose meaning he didn't even understand. At the moment, he was actually admiring the wonderful weather; how warm the sunlight felt on his skin, how fresh the air floating around him was, watching the green grasses and colorful flowers blooming happily amongst the bushes, enjoying the sight of a little blonde boy running around chasing a cat...
Oh, no. Poor cat. It's going to get bullied once Ruki lays his hands on it.
Even Kai-Baa-chan let him chase that poor cat to its doom; he was standing not far away, arms folded on his chest, a big grin stretched across his face as he watched Ruki. He usually spoiled that cat, and now he was letting Ruki scare that same cat to death? Ah, maybe Baa-chan was also amused by the sight of the little brat running around the backyard, through the bushes, jumping over pots of roses and pushing through himawari pillars, following that cat wherever it ran. When Ruki stumbled and fell, bumping his face on the ground it was even funnier; everybody including Baa-chan laughed loudly. But that kid was relentless and he got back up and ran again, despite the big bruise on his chin.
Let's just hope Jii-chan didn't see Ruki ruining his beloved garden...
"RUKI!!!"
Well, so much for Reita's hope... Along came Jii-chan, his yukata swishing as he ran barefoot through the garden, trying to catch Ruki. Ruki stopped, the remnants of laughter still plastered to his face until Jii-chan came closer to him making him blush. "Don't run around in the garden! You're destroying my flowers!" Jii-chan exclaimed, smacking the blonde head in a scolding manner. Baa-chan just laughed even harder at the sight of Ruki turning even redder under the glare of Aoi-jii-chan.
The soft tinkling sound of strings being picked made Reita turn his head around, only to find Uruha trying to master a certain instrument. It was Jii-chan's old shamisen that he could sometimes be seen playing. Jii-chan had never let anyone besides himself touch that shamisen, and Reita had a feeling that it was very old; he guessed that it might have been an heirloom passed from generation to generation and that that was why it was so precious to Aoi-kun. It was strange, now, that he actually let Uruha play with it... Uruha looked careful handling the instrument, so focused in trying to get his pickings in tune with the strings that he seemed oblivious to everything else around him. He had been like that ever since Reita and Ruki had arrived. "Is it so hard?" Reita asked slowly, afraid that he might ruin the great amount of concentration on Uruha's face.
No matter how slowly Reita uttered his question however, Uruha got startled anyway and lifted his head up swiftly. "Ah," he replied slowly, a gentle smile stretching across his face, "It is not as easy as it seems, apparently." He laughed, "Aoi-kun seems so good at playing this; in watching him, I had thought it wouldn't be so hard to give it a try but..." He shrugged, lowering the hand that was holding the pick to his lap, "Yes, it's very hard." Reita laughed at that confession, Uruha laughing along with him, a pinkish blush blooming on his cheeks. "I thought it would be just like playing a guitar," Uruha continued, "But it's not."
"Oh, so you can play a guitar?" Reita asked.
"Hmm," Uruha pondered, shifting his sight forward, "I had a feeling I could. I mean... A few days ago, I found Aoi-kun's guitar, and I tried to play it. I wrapped my fingers around the neck, pressing the strings and strumming it with my other hand... I could play pretty well and I don't mean to be cocky, but the sound didn't come out funny. It felt familiar; holding and playing a guitar... That means I must have been able to play a guitar, right?" He turned back to Reita, looking at the other boy as if asking for his approval.
Reita nodded, smiling back. "Maybe you were someone that was really good at playing the guitar; maybe you were in a band or something..."
Uruha grinned. "Ah... That would be interesting, ne? Me, in a band?" The grin slowly dissipated as Uruha lowered his eyes. With careful movements, he placed the shamisen and its pick on the floor, laying them there gently as if they were small babies that would cry if he did it too roughly. "Too bad I can't remember a thing..." Uruha sighed.
It must’ve been so hard... Reita looked at the man sitting in front of him pitifully. To not be able to remember something as simple as your own name, or who your family was; your parents, your siblings, where you lived, which school you attended, who your friends were... If it had been Reita, he would've been frustrated to the point of wanting to hang himself, or maybe even shoot himself in the head-that way would’ve been easier and quicker. It would be just like being all alone in the universe, not knowing anyone at all… Worse, you couldn't take comfort in past memories because there was nothing more than a huge blank space to discover.
Reita's thoughts were cut off when Jii-chan approached them, sitting across from Reita, right next to Uruha. "Giving up already?" he smiled widely to Uruha, pointing to the shamisen lying on the floor. Uruha lifted his head, already smiling again, his face brightening considerably. "I don’t think I could become a master in just one day, Aoi-kun..." Uruha muttered, "But maybe next week I'll be able to perform a concert and surprise you."
Reita smiled along, not just because of the joke Uruha had just uttered, but also because of how quick the smile and the reddish blush returned to Uruha's face after saying it. Maybe Reita had just been pessimistic thinking that Uruha should’ve been completely miserable when in fact, Uruha was smiling brightly and looking extremely strong for someone who couldn't even remember his own name. Aoi-Jii-chan joked back, saying that that should be something to bet on. Reita giggled along when they both laughed.
Uruha was lucky, actually, now that Reita thought more carefully, quietly observing how Uruha and Jii-chan were smiling at each other. He was lucky to have had Aoi-Jii-chan find him and take him under his wing, at this inn. He already looked comfortable with everything, even though his meeting with this place wasn't at all friendly; now he seemed like he actually belonged here, like someone who had lived here for many years and Reita had to admit, Jii-chan seemed to be comfortable with Uruha's presence too. It had been a while since Jii-chan had giggled this much... Yeah, it could've been so much worse if it wasn't Jii-chan who saw what happened. If it was somebody else who had passed by that street on that day, Reita wasn't sure that Uruha would've been saved at all.
"That brat," Aoi-kun mumbled, already turning his sight back to the garden where Ruki and Baa-chan were sitting side by side on a long bench near the pots of roses; Reita shifted his sight there too and found Ruki busy poking the cat on Baa-chan's lap with his finger. Poor cat... Baa-chan kept trying to shove Ruki's evil like hands away from the cat, but Ruki only grinned and poked it even more persistently. Was he letting out the grudge he had for his mother’s cat on Baa-chan's cat? Aww... Ruki...
Oh, that reminded Reita! "Jii-chan!" he called, "There's something that I--well, it's actually... Ruki's request..."
"You won't stop calling me that, will you? I'm not that old, Reita, really..." Aoi-kun shook his head, sighing, "What is it that you wanna say?"
"It's about... The school festival..." Okay, Reita, do it quick; say it. It wouldn't take even five minutes: "Ruki was wondering if... You would spare some time to attend the school festival."
"The school festival? When?"
"Umm... In another two weeks: Saturday."
"School festival... Sounds interesting..." Uruha bit his lower lip, looking quite curious. Well, for someone who couldn't remember whether or not he even attended school, the school festival must’ve sounded really nice.
"You wanna come?" Jii-chan asked Uruha.
Uruha nodded repeatedly, sparkles-that were almost identical to the sparkles that would appear in Ruki's eyes whenever he discovered something interesting (like a new game, looking at a puppy dog, or when he saw a new variation of meal Reita brought to school)-glinting in his eyes. "I don't remember if I had seen any festivals before in my life but it sounds really interesting," he said, turning to Reita, "What will it be like, Reita-kun? I mean, what kind of events will be held there?"
"Umm... Well... Each class will be decorated with a certain theme; the kids will dress up according to the theme they chose. There will be food stands and game stands and the extracurricular clubs might even be holding some exhibitions too... Last year we even had a music performance; it was pretty cool," Reita explained, feeling quite excited himself seeing Uruha's eyes glinting even brighter, "And... At the end of the event there is usually a Hanabi show. That's my favorite part: the Hanabi feast."
"Hanabi?" Uruha squealed, "Oh, Aoi-kun, I wanna go and see!"
Jii-chan laughed, seeing how excited Uruha had become. "Well... I guess I can't say no, now, can I?" he shrugged, "Yeah, attending the school festival wouldn't be so bad."
Uh... Reita hadn’t exactly been expecting Uruha to tag along; he was supposed to ask only Aoi-kun-based on Ruki's request. But... Was that a problem? Reita couldn't forbid anyone to come if they wanted to come, and Uruha looked so happy when Jii-chan agreed-his grin was stretched wide, his pretty, neat lines of teeth glinting in the sun. No, he couldn't say something like 'Ruki won't like you come along, Uruha-kun...' when he saw Uruha looking like this... Ruki would have to deal with that fact later, when Jii-chan showed up to the festival with Uruha; it really wasn’t Reita's business. Reita scratched his head a little uncomfortably; it wouldn't be a bad thing, would it? No, hopefully not.
He breathed. Well, it was done; he did what Ruki had asked him to do and at least Aoi-Jii-chan had said he was going... He turned to look at Ruki running around again, giggling aloud, having seemed to have forgotten how Jii-chan had scolded him just a few minutes ago for chasing the poor cat (that had already suffered enough with Ruki’s continual poking). The two of them were now running through the himawari blooms. Don't break any of the petals, Ruki, Jii-chan wouldn't like it...
