I had a dream I was on some generic university campus. A friend ran up to me. She was naked, because she had slipped in some vomit and gotten it all over her clothes. First of all, Angel is a dolt. Second of all, Spike was NOT working for Wolfram & Hart, more alongside some of their employees. But he did not sign a contract or get a salary, ergo not technically working for them. Thirdly, all the other so called vampires that work for W&H are stupid.

Proper vampires are mavericks.

Fuck it, goods were exchanged for services several times by Spike, both with the scoobies paying him for his help and in Wolfram and Hart giving him things for "aiding" Angel. Hell, one could argue that his involvement with Lindsay was a professional one. Don't argue semantics with me. I'll win.

I'm not saying that he didn't have a professional relationship with them. I'm just saying he didn't work FOR anyone. He was more of an independent contractor. Which is allowable under Cool Vampire bylaws, because you work on your own and are your own boss.
