So Tiff is going back to school in the fall. My uncle has invited me yet again to come visit him in Phoenix. Next summer is the trip to France and Spain so a trip to Phoenix is out of the question ( Read more... )

Are you driving or flying? ladyismene June 3 2010, 11:41:37 UTC
I always suggest driving, because my quirky husband and I have driven cross-country several times and like the scenery. To save money on hotels - get as many people as possible to split the cost. That goes for gas as well ( ... )

at the moment it's me, Tiff and Kris going. I really want to go to Arizona and they really want to go to Vegas...so...we're planning on driving (since flying between multiple cities and/or finding transit between the two seems to increase the cost exponentially) and doing both. If we stay with ppl we know in AZ, do Grand Canyon on the day we would have been travelling between the two cities, and then most of our Vegas plans seem to be sight seeing and taking pictures in front of places...I think we can keep it relatively inexpensive.

Initially we were going to fly due to time restrictions, but at this point, even if we got a rental and split gas it would still be cheaper to drive than fly. My only problem is that I will be the primary driver, and none of us have driven through mountains before. If we go here to Phx to Vegas and back, all online maps suggest a circular route through very different states.

We've driven through Colorado, Utah, Arizona - most everywhere out there. The mountains (as I recall) were only bad in a few places, mainly because of semis ploughing by us on curves with drop-offs into deep ravines. (I believe those were in Colorado on the way to California, and it was in the winter...). Otherwise, it's actually quite beautiful. :)

We drove from Vegas to Phoenix - and ended up having to travel north to Flagstaff for lower temperatures because our car kept overheating. As long as yours is in kept-up condition, you shouldn't have that problem.

I don't, however, remember a whole lot of reststops (that might've changed by now, though). Make sure your gas tank is full and you have plenty of water with you. It will be VERY VERY HOT in August.

Sure, do both. The scenery is nice. :)

what I need is to find one other confident driver to join my trip. akarui_rynka June 7 2010, 04:43:04 UTC
awesome.
deep ravines.

Well, we're still debating between which city to do first. I think the only pro to doing Vegas first is saving like thirty bucks on a night of hotel.

The issue I'm focusing on is...where will we be when it gets dark. Home is fifteen hours to Denver. So if we leave shortly after the rental place opens (none of us are confident in our own car's ability) it'll be like midnight when we're heading deeper into the mountains. Vegas is ten hours from Denver, so if we leave Vegas in the AM, i figure we'll be through most of the mountains before sunset, and we can always leave earlier on the way home. Whereas, my memories about trips along route 66 path puts night time in oklahoma...wooo...all that flat open land. I think even my passengers could handle that.
