Interesting. From what I can tell of 60, you certainly have a point about Arachne, who made a neat observation at the end about herself and, perhaps, Maka. She was prideful, but acknowledged where she had failed.
Your quotation brought to mind that Okubo's Arachne parallels the one of myth not only in her downfall, but her ambition. By that I'm referring to the fact that the original saw herself as at least equal in skill to the goddess Athena. Similarly, in a sense Arachne was fashioning herself as an equal rival to Shinigami. Whereas he is Death, she was the mother of the demon weapons. Where he values order, she would have brought about insanity. Both weave in their own ways through their knowledge of the work of Eibon. Just a thought.
Yes, I thought it was interesting that both Arachnes are challenging gods--to be seen as equals, or as you point out, to surpass them. I hadn't thought of Arachne and Shinigami-sama as such opposites before, but I like that thought.
