Title: White day
Pairings: DaeJae
Summary: Youngjae gave up his dream for his love life~
Notes: MY FIRST DAEJAE! 8D
Jung Daehyun was always over shadowed. He was always overshadowed by others who were smarter than him, by other who look better than him, by those who were better than him in sports, but he was only over shadowed by one person when he sings.
Well, maybe he would had been better if he actually sang in class instead of refusing every single time.
Daehyun never sings in class, he sings at that small cozy coffee shop behind the library and he sings at the bar the other side of town. Occasionally he gets jobs to sing at hotels or wedding receptions but he always, always hides his identity, always hiding behind a mask when he's not on stage.
He sings behind a curtain in the coffee house somtimes when it's a full house, and when he sings at the bar, he wears really really fashionable clothes and hair styled to not match personality and he always wears a mask when he is off the stage.
But a certain Yoo Youngjae knows those eyes. He stares at those eyes every single time he, Youngjae I mean, sings in class, when the male in front of the class singing a song, trying his best to sing a song which will be able to change that beautiful emotionless face and he stares at those eyes across his class who always wears a mask, always last to walk out always first to enter. He just stares and his eyes only focuses on that male.
Youngjae fell for those eyes when he first saw them, when he first had the courage to sing, and ever since then he just sings every single time just to see that male, because he knew that was the one. And when he heard the owner of those eyes sing at that coffee house behind the library one rainy day, he fell for the owner immediately. He saw his full face and he was dumb founded. He was right, those eyes belonged to the most beautiful and handsome face ever.
Youngjae didn't purposely go to that coffee shop that day. He was trapped there because of the rain, he accidentally left his umbrella and the library was closing hence him going there. He swore under his breath seeing as how run down the place looked yet he had to go in there since it's the only shop available, he ordered something warm and sat at the far end of the shop. Waiting for his brother to pick him up after work, he watched others for a while till he got bored and took out his books to read.
Another 2 hours to go. He told himself.
Half an hour before he had to leave and someone enters the shop. He was drenched and the male at the barista gasped.
"Jung Daehyun! You didn't need to come! Look at you! Jongup go get the towels, quick! Daehyun I told you not to!"
"I'm sorry. But I was already on the way so I just came."
"Does you parents know?"
"Yeah."
"Daehyun, your parents will kill me if they find out!"
"It's okay, Himchan. Relax. They wouldn't mind."
"Aishh," another male with brown hair came with towels and Daehyun was ushered to the back. The barista's complains could be hear in the whole coffee shop and just when Daehyun comes out in a new set of clothes, being dry and when the barista stopped his complains, another male walks in.
Also as drenched as Daehyun was.
"Hi." he said, smiling a gummy smile,"Fine weather out there isn't it?"
"Yongguk not you too!" the barista whined.
And some people laughed, even the brown haired male.
"Why are you guys all idiots? Or maybe you guys are deaf! I said, don't come and drown yourselves out there! Why don't you guys ever listen to me?"
"Can't you look at it as we want to see you?" the male said.
"I don't care if you miss me or whatever, it's raining out there! You'll get sick if you do that!"
"Here we go again," Daehyun joked. The barista glared at him as he ushered the male to the back.
"Gukkie, what did I say? You're washing your own clothes this time." he continued complaining and Daehyun shook his head. The brown hair male gave him a cup and by the looks of it, Daehyun seemed pretty happy with it.
"So Dae, you going to brighten our mood here or what?" a customer at the other end said. Youngjae saw that Daehyun smiled at her.
"Relax, Hyosung. I just got here and besides, Himchan sounds really good don't you think?" a few others laughed at that and Daehyun took a seat near the small stage.
"Relax, Channie. I'm fine. Really."
"I'm not taking care of you if you're sick. I don't care."
"Yes, you will. You always do."
"This time I'm not."
"Yes, you will," he smiled as he leaned towards the slightly shorter male and said it in a loving tone,"And you know it."
The male blushed slightly and turned away.
"Shut up. Daehyun aren't you suppose to be on stage?"
"Don't acuse me! Your complains would had drained out my beautiful voice anyways!"
"Oh so blame me for it huh? Who was the one who decided to only drop by when it rains, huh?" Daehyun smiled as he lifted his cup and Youngjae just stared at him.
He watched as Daehyun stood up and walked to the stage, making himself comfortable on the stage. He sits on the chair in the middle and he smiles.
"DaeDae, sitting and singing in public? Wow. I should come here more often when it rains." another girl said.
Youngjae scrunched his face at the name given to the object of his affection but let it slide when the male cleared his throat. Youngjae watched as he scanned the crowd and he saw him stop at his way, froze for a few seconds but he turned away and pretended he didn't see anything.
It was merely 2 seconds but the the barista and the other male at the front table glanced towards Youngjae. And everyone quiet down when Daehyun started singing.
Youngjae froze when he heard at beautiful face singing. His voice was just perfect and he could go up to chords even Youngjae couldn't reach. To think that this quiet male could sing such a powerful yet slow and calming song. Youngjae watched as Daehyun sing songs which increased the mood of the cafe and everyone was happy with it.
Half an hour later and Daehyun is off the stage, disappearing to the back of the cafe. Youngjae's phone rings and it's his que to leave.
Before he leaves he hears someone talking.
"Who's the kid, Channie?"
"Don't know never seen him before. But I have a feeling he'll be here more often." Youngjae saw the raven haired male smile towards him and he flushed, running off to the car outside.
The next day, Daehyun didn't come to class but he did appear on the following day. And by the looks of it, he was sick. Definately sick.
Their lecturer gave them a team assignment and everyone were to choose a partner to complete it with. Their class had an uneven number of student so usually it would have a three member group or a person left out. And by default, Daehyun would be the one left alone. Not this time though, cause when they were to write the groups and girls asking Youngjae to include himself in their groups...
.. Youngjae blurted out,"I'm pairing up with Daehyun."
And everyone turned to Youngjae. Then to Daehyun. The male didn't catch it at first but when he saw everyone looking his way he blinked.
"What?" a girl said.
"I'm pairing up with Daehyun. And only him."
"Is he out of his mind? Daehyun barely even talks!" another hushly said.
Their lecturer quiet them down and everyone stole glances towards Daehyun. On a normal day, the male would had glared back but he was sick today, and being sick sucks.
"You're just lucky, Youngjae takes pity on you. Be thankful."
"Yeah. He'll never do something like this!"
"Maybe he wants extra credit for this?"
"I think the teacher just wanted him to do it. He is the best after all." Daehyun ignored them as he packed his stuff.
"Are you listening to us?" a girl said. Daehyun sighed and gave up packing. He was tired, he was drowsy from the stupid medicine and his head was throbbing, he didn't have stupid time to put up with stupid things like this. He just stared blankly at them and waited for them to just leave.
"Don't fucking give me that look." their leader snapped, she wanted to slap him when someone stopped her.
"That's enough. Leave him alone." the girls turned and there stood Youngjae.
"But oppa! You didn't need to do it! You don't need to take pity on him!"
"Yeah, he doesn't need it!"
"Oppa..."
"Leave." they started to whine and he raised his voice,"I didn't take pity on him and no one asked me to do it. Now shut up and leave." the girls shut their tramps and left.
Everyone knew they shouldn't piss Youngjae off. It brings bad luck and he'll never speak to you again, ever.
"Sorry bout that." Daehyun nodded and grabbed his back. Reliefed that he finally gets to go. He was already planning his way back home when Youngjae grabbed his arm and he almost lost his balance. Daehyun stared at him, eyes wide and he was breathing heavily, Youngjae saw his eyes were slightly red and his breathing was not in good condition. Daehyun cleared his throat and it broke Youngjae's train of thoughts,"I'm sorry I chose you as a partner without consulting you." Daehyun nodded. He'll deal with this when he was feeling better, right now he felt like he's going to pass out.
Youngjae finally let go of his hand and Daehyun stumbled on his feet. He walked out of the room, more like running actually. Youngjae sighed and walked out too, he looked up when he reached the gates, and he saw Daehyun collapse. Thankfully someone managed to grab him before he fell to the ground.
Youngjae recognized it as the barista of the coffee house and the male was panicking. Daehyun was unconscious.
"Shit. Yongguk!" he shouted and another male came running. The short haired male hashly carried him on the back and the unconscious male was placed into the backseat of a car. The shorter male was worried, he kept on rambling and he sat in the back seat with Daehyun, the other male on the other hand, drove the car. He was in composure and he knew the danger if the other male will to drive.
And through out the whole process, Youngjae just stared at them. When he snapped back to reality, they were already long gone.
Looks like he's not coming to class for the next few days.
And Youngjae left.
~OwO~
Daehyun came back in a good shape a few days later, he was smiling. He still wore his mask but he was happy to finally be able to come out of his house. His parents and the Banghim couple made hell of a fuss over him.
He entered class and noticed all the chairs have moved. He blinked and stood there.
"Good morning." a voice behind him said, startling him. Daehyun turned with eyes slightly wide and the latter laughed,"Oh mai gawd. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to!" Daehyun glared at the male and the male smiled sheepishly.
"We moved the stuff cause we're suppose to be doing group preparations from now on. Our class is chosen to perform for this year's festivals."
"Festivals?" Daehyun said softly.
"Yeap, year end, winter, spring, lunar and maybe even summer! And we're suppose to stay as our groups till graduation!" Youngjae beamed.
"I'm not pairing up with you." Daehyun said out right. A huge stab went through Youngjae's heart and he stumbled on his feet.
"Eh?" he said. His world started to coming crashing down.
"I'm not pairing up with you. I can't sing anyways, choose another partner."
"Yes, you can! I heard you before."
"I can't. My voice cracks."
"I heard you at the coffee house. And you sound beautiful." Daehyun looked at him and shook his head.
"Choose another partner."
Youngjae didn't choose another partner and Daehyun still refused to sing. Youngjae tried to convince him, tried to talk him to it and in the end he found himself in the coffee house.
"You look pretty cheered up today." the barista says to him,"What ya wanna drink?"
"Mocha."
"Plain mocha?" Youngjae gave it a thought.
"Nah, change it to a Double Shot."
"Double Shot? Expresso or Alcohol?" He laughed at his own joke but Youngjae just stared at him. He pouted when he didn't hear a response,"So you're as cold as Daehyun huh?"
"What?"
"I saw you at his school that day. When he collapsed."
"You did?"
"Mhmm... What's your name kid?"
"Youngjae. Yoo Youngjae. I'm his erm, course mate."
"Erm course mate?" the male repeated, an eyebrow higher than the other.
"I paired up with him for the group project without consulting him. He refused to do it and now I'm stuck."
"Hmm... I didn't hear about this." he turned to the new comer,"Hey, Gukkie have you heard about a Yoo Youngjae from DaeDae?"
"Youngjae? Yeah. Best in class, the one who grouped up with him."
"Anything else you boys hiding from me?" the male laughed.
"Yeah, says he doesn't want to do it."
"I thought I was the umma of this family! How come I didn't know?"
"Appa-s talk better with their sons." the barista snorted and reached his hand out to Youngjae,"I'm Kim Himchan. Daehyun's... Make shift Umma. I, we take care of him when his parents are busy. We're his neighbours. That's his appa." Yongguk raised his eyebrows when he heard his calling.
"Bang Yongguk. You are?"
"Yoo Youngjae." Yongguk turned to Himchan and there was a silence.
"You're not."
"What?" Himchan asked innocently.
"You're not, Bang Himchan. You're not doing it."
"Do what?"
"Channie, leave him alone. Let him settle his own problems."
"Gukkie, a mum can't help but worry about our baby! He's a grown up male, he needs a companion!"
"Go make Youngjae's drink, Channie. Leave Daehyun to his problems."
"I didn't even do anything!" Yongguk gave him a knowing look and Himchan sighed.
"I'm his umma!" he whined and Yongguk smacked his butt as he walked passed him.
"And I'm his appa. Now leave the boy alone."
The short haired male sat himself next to Youngjae and smiled his gummy smile.
"We're just a few years elder than him in case you're wondering. I'm 24 this year, Channie's the same age. We moved in to the house next to Daehyun's about 8 years ago."
"8? But you guys would had been..."
"16. Yeah... We, me and Himchan... We had a past, started anew, his parents helped us a lot. In return, we took care of him."
"What do you guys do?"
"Himchan's runs this cafe. I run the bar at other side of town."
"Eh?" Youngjae said.
"Don't worry. It's clean. Just a normal bar. Himchan works during the day and I work during the night. I open the bar only when I feel like it, it's an abandoned place so it doesn't really matter." Youngjae nodded.
"I see."
"How did you find us?" Yongguk said.
"Rainy day, I just came into the only shop available."
"And Daehyun?"
"Class. I... I fell in love with his eyes. At first sight."
Someone smacked Yongguk's head and they turned.
"You said not to interfere with Daehyun's love life." Himchan said, he placed the cup on the table and the duo bickered back and forth for awhile.
"Anyways, Youngjae. What are your feelings for Daehyun?" now another smack came towards both their heads and Jongup was standing there.
"You guys promised, Daehyun!" the duo then shooed him away.
"Doesn't matter. He wouldn't know. Now leave this matter to us." Himchan said.
"Hyung." the male warned.
"Relax, Jonguppie. We'll be good and Daehyun wouldn't know." Jongup rolled his eyes and walked away.
They chatted a little more then it was to the topic.
"Come on. Are you or are you not going to confess to him?"
"What?"
"Youngjae I can clearly see you fell in love with him. Also, you made him your partner, Daehyun never gets a partner. He's a solo!"
"And you said you fell for his eyes. So tell us, when or how you going to settle it?"
And again the duo was smacked on the head. Yongguk whined, that's the third time already! and Himchan wanted to protest but when they turned, Daehyun was standing there clearly not amused. They saw Jongup smiling and mouthing an I told you so!
"Dae..."
"You guys promised."
"I know. But I couldn't help it."
"Hyung." and Himchan's eyes grew in horror at that, pretending he was in a dilemma.
"Oh no! Appa! Daehyun is growing up! He's not calling us umma and appa anymore. What did I do to deserve this treatment?" Himchan faked cry and Daehyun smacked his head again.
"Leave my love life alone." Daehyun finally looked at the male seated there and he froze. Really he froze. His eyes were wide open and he was frozen in his tracks.
"H-Hi." Youngjae said. Daehyun grabbed both Yongguk's and Himchan's arms and they were dragged to the back. Shoutings could be heard, something broke and then a door was slammed shut.
Himchan came out and sighed.
"Well, that's that. Now let's talk about you."
"Why does he do that?"
"Hmm?"
"Why do you guys let him do that?"
"That?"
"Yeah, why do you let him have his way? Let him do what he wants and stuff?"
"Well, technically. We've just been doing this ever since the incident."
"What incident?"
"Five years ago. His girlfriend, well, he found her in a not so nice manner."
"What do you mean?"
"She took him for granted. Took his dream away from him, stole his voice and used it as hers. You would say he could sue her for copyrights but well, he couldn't. The company she was signed to already protected her. She caused her own downfall but he was hurt. His lovelife, she just took everything away from him."
"What does that got to do with all this?"
"We introduced him to her." Youngjae wide eyed,"Well, I did. I, I was the one who introduced them, I was the one who well signed Daehyun up for that scholarship and well, me and Gukkie was the one who..."
"S-Scholarship?"
"Yeah, Daehyun is on a scholarship in class."
"But he..."
"Rarely sings in class. I know."
"Why?"
"He doesn't want to persue his dream. Says he's sick of it. That's why he doesn't pretty much talk. Doesn't want to hear his own voice sometimes. That's probably why we let him do as he pleases."
Youngjae nodded as he absorbed the info.
The next day and the day after that, Youngjae just glued himself to Daehyun. Going where ever he goes, just follows him and talks to him. Daehyun finally agreed to do it after being pestered by Himchan and a warning from Yongguk.
They decided the songs and stuff, divided the parts, changed parts and lyrics. They rarely practiced but when they do, everyone turns to see the person singing and everyone gets charmed by the voice almost immediately.
A lot of stuff happened after that, they performed, they got close and well, they pretty much got used to each other being duos. Only the two of them can match each other's singing after all, so well they sticked to each other up till graduation. And it was kind of good, they exchanged numbers, emails and stuff, they found out they had some similarities but other than that, they keep to themselves and continue their lifestyles.
Soon, the day of the final performance was finally here, the graduation day performance. Everyone had to attend this, to do the last show, their last show and everyone was compulsary to make their best at this and hopefully, hopefully get an offer to some big time music company. To add the pressure, everyone were there, stars, big time CEOs of music companies, diplomats, other students, everyone. Daehyun stood at his and Youngjae's room and waited, he texted Youngjae and went to the extend of calling him when it was almost their turn.
"Shit, shit, shit, shit! WHERE ARE YOU?" Daehyun shouted. After the nth time of calling, Youngjae finalky picked up.
"5 minutes till show time."
"YOUNGJAE IT'S OUR TURN!"
"I know."
"THEN WHERE ARE YOU?"
"I'm not coming."
"What?"
"I'm not coming."
"Why?"
"Himchan told me about your dream. The songs that you were suppose to sing, your songs, your creations. And it was you who sang that song perfectly. This is your time to shine, Daehyun. You have a scholarship to fulfill, Daehyun. If you do this, you don't need to pay the scholarship back now do you?"
"Youngjae."
"3 MINUTES JUNG."
"Okay! Okay!"
"Go, Daehyun. You can do this. I've seen you sing, your voice is the golden voice. Don't let me outshine the brightest star. Go catch your forgotten dream."
And Youngjae hung up.
Daehyun knew Youngjae came to this field alone but he didn't except him to give up everything for Daehyun. Daehyun has it too easily but somehow...
He felt like he had to, like he's given the second chance in his life.
And he did it. Daehyun took a deep breath and everyone started talking about why he is the only one on stage.
"Emm," the microphone shrieked. Everyone quiet down after that,"Youngjae couldn't make it."
Then the fuss all began and people starting talking then Daehyun continued,"But we can't end the show just like that can we?"
Everyone quiet down again and the music started playing.
And Daehyun sang. He sang like he used to, he sang like he knew the song inside out, he sang like nothing has happened in his life, he sang like there's no tomorrow and he sang like he owned and belonged to that stage.
Everyone was mesmerized by that. Amazed at home someone like Daehyun who barely speaks can sing so beautifully and so wonderfully. He indeed had the golden voice.
Youngjae smiled as he watched Daehyun sing the last verse and when everyone was still stunned by it. Himchan was the first to stand up and clap then Yongguk and Daehyun's parents then everyone clapped and cheered for him.
Youngjae smiled as he left the building, that was the last time he was going to see him. Even though he wasn't the star tonight, not the one performing his dream solo, Youngjae knew he did the right thing.
Because giving someone their dream back is better than acheiving you hopeless fruitless dream.
Youngjae put a card into Daehyun's locker. A love letter to him, he smiled and he walked away, there's nothing else he needed to do right now. Daehyun is the star now, the star who is shinning ever so brightly in the dark skies of his life.
After the after party of the graduation, Daehyun walked to his locker and he found the card. He stuffed it into his bag and he emptied the rest of his locker, curious of what it could be.
That night after all the partying and stuff, Daehyun finally took out the card and he read it.
A tear fell from Daehyun's eyes. It was the most beautiful thing he has ever read, he sobbed and he cried. How could he had let someone so precious to him just go like that? He cried himself to sleep, hugging that beautiful pink card and it'll forever be with him, no matter where he goes.
Because Jung Daehyun promised to his soul and to God, he'll find him. The person who gave him his second chance to life.
~OwO~
Five years later~
Youngjae drives his car and stops at the trafic light. He thinks about all the accounts and he sighs, all these numbers sucks. His life sucks and, wait a sec, he doesn't even have a life! It's just work, numbers, meetings, clients, more stupid numbers, and home. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe opening a cafe or a toy shop wouldn't be so bad even!
The traffic light turns green and he drives into the first junction, almost ramping into the next car coming through. Youngjae wanted to yell at him or her saying they're at the wrong side of the road, scolding them for being reckless but he froze when he saw who it was.
In the car was a lady driving with Jung Daehyun as the passenger. He was laughing with her and she was beautiful! Youngjae watched as the car reversed and disappeared, he snapped back into reality when the car behind him honked him.
How long has it been since I've seen him?
Much to Youngjae's surprise, Daehyun turned down all offers for him to be an idol. He continued singing and he volunteered to teach vocal classes but he merely ended up as a musical singer! He was the main singer most of the times and people paid a lot just to see him, he was indeed the best and sometimes he even does musicals overseas!
Youngjae smiled as he pulled over the at familiar coffee house behind the library. He hasn't been here in a while and finally he gets to run away from all those stupid numbers and have a break.
"Oh my god! GUK LOOK IT'S YOUNGJAE!" Himchan squeeled. He crashed himself onto Youngjae when he entered and the younger male grabbed the doorframe to stay standing,"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU DISAPPEARED? WHERE AND WHY HAVE YOU DISAPPEARED?"
"Chan, let the boy enter." Youngjae waved at the other male and he waved back.
"I don't care Gukkie! I need answers now! NOW NOW NOWWWWW!"
Youngjae watched as Himchan and Yongguk argued about who gets to ask what. Jongup brought Youngjae his drink and the latter smiled.
After almost fifteen minutes of Youngjae laughing at them arguing, the door opens and two people come in.
"Ummaaaa?"
The trio turned and within seconds Himchan crashing himself to Daehyun, at the doorframa, again.
"I GET TO ASK DAEHYUN! I DON'T CARE!" he squeels. He clings himself to the younger male and the younger male smiles.
"Get off him, Himchan."
"Shut up, noona." the lady rolls her eyes and she walks to their table.
The moment Daehyun sees Youngjae on the table, he freezes. His eyes wide and he looks like a deer looking into spotlights. Youngjae smiles painfully back and drinks his drink.
They all sit down and Daehyun is just staring at the other male. He ignores Himchan's questions, Yongguk's nudges and even the lady's talkings. Youngjae felt out of place sitting there, he listened to them talk for a while. Listen to Daehyun slutter as he talked about what he's been up too. Youngjae could only smile hearing those words.
He had an awesome job, a nice and cosy home, his neighbours were awesome, his parents supported him and now he has a girl. His life was well blessed and Youngjae was happy for him.
An hour later and Youngjae excused himself. He stood up, saying he needed to go and he said his goodbyes. He waved at them one last time before he left and when he did, he knew he's probably never coming back.
A few meters later and he hears footsteps and a panting. The person grabs his hand and Youngjae stops, eyes wide, and wanting to protest.
"Wha..."
"I've, been, looking for you." Youngjae blinked.
"What?"
"I've been looking every where for you. All the music companies, vocal schools, musical teams everything music. But I couldn't find you." Youngjae looked at him and he laughed, he just laughed. The other male frowned as he watch him laugh his head off.
"What?" he finally said.
"That's cause I didn't enter the music industry."
"Why? It was your dream!"
"But well, I gave up that dream."
"For me?"
"Well, yeah." now the other male frowned.
"Why?"
"Because my parents didn't want me to do it. I had to be their heir of their accounting firm."
"Why don't you ask your elder brother?"
"I would if I could find him."
"Well, I did."
"I know.. It's almost impossible but... Wait what?"
"I found him." the slightly shorter male said,"I found him, some where and I talked to him then I found out that he's jobless so I hired him. I mean I got him hired at the vocal school I'm teaching and well, that's where you can find him."
"Ou...."
"Youngjae. That's not why I'm here for."
"I know."
"I wanted to tell you something." Youngjae nodded and he watched as the male took something out of his wallet.
It was his letter, his card. It was very worn out like it's been moving from places to places and being crushed and stuff but the words were still there though a little faded but it was still there.
"I read it, and kept it."
"Daehyun, you didn't need..."
"And I accept it." Youngjae scrunched his eyes.
"What?"
"I accept your love Yoo Youngjae."
"B-But that lady just now..."
"Was Himchan's sister."
It took Youngjae some time till he processed it and they laughed. Both of them laughed.
"I can finally reply your Valentines' Day letter." Youngjae raised his eyebrows and the next thing he knew, Daehyun was kissing him,"Happy White Day, Jae."
And Youngjae smiled in his kiss.
Enddddd~
