Why do people feel the need to contribute to this guy's fund raising? Are they afraid the club will disappear into the dust without their contributions? Or are they just all exceedingly generous with quite hefty philanthropic budgets without being philanthropically savvy?

Yes. It's a common warning on hobby sites: "the hosting bill is due, I can't pay it all myself!" That's generally followed anywhere from two hours to two days later with "all paid, plus $20 over. Let me know if you want a small refund or to have it put toward next year's bill."
Not that I think most of these people are net savvy enough to have seen it themselves, but maybe they've heard younger friends or relatives mention it?
