Maybe the suggested use of a condom, is part of the psychological construct of depressive people, i.e. they are anxious individuals ultimately having depressive qualities. In contrast those who like to not wear a condom, are less anxious, less depressive and in general have a psychology that is not prone to developing depression.
That was what I thought first as well, but not using condoms does not necessarily equal to not using contraception at all. What I also think should be considered is whether the subjects were in a relationship or if they engaged in casual sex, as the reasons for using condoms over other contraceptives would be slightly different If you engage in casual sex and use condoms to prevent STDs, then your psychology is probably more anxious prone that that of those who engage in casual sex with other contraceptives. However if you are in a relationship (in which you theoretically do not need to worry about STDs) and choose to use condoms, it might just be because hormonal contraceptives are not suitable, i.e. physiological reasons. I would imagine they have controlled this in the study, I just can't access the rest of the paper right now.
