If I weren't so rusty, I could teach you how to be one of the best gods damned Hunters ever. Not blowing my own horn but I was one of the best Hunters to have played the game. Unfortunately, I haven't played in a year and a half.

Well, here's a question. Will the freeze trap be of any use to me in charming new pets?

It is a big help, yeah. Pull from max range with concussive shot, start taming, and have a freeze trap laid out a yard or two in front of you. Depending on your level (and therefore the rank Freeze trap you have), you shouldn't take more than a hit or two, if that.

like how to assist whatever has hate

For this you need to know who's going to be generating hate (known as threat or aggro in WoW). For instance runs, that'll probably be your tank.

/assist [tankname]

(so, "/assist Fred", where Fred = name of your tank)

or even a macro that sets my pet to engage every time I attack something from range

/petattack
/cast [name of whatever spell you open your ranged attack with - probably "/cast Arcane Shot" or something like that]

I found an easier way to do this, I think: just set focus on whomever I'm supposed to plant Misdirection on, then obsessively renew it every 30 seconds.

Yep, that would work fine :) I just try to steer clear of telling people "use focus" in case they're using it for something else (like a trap target, for instance).
