And my bank have just phoned me to tell me that someone has got their hands on my credit card details and as a result have been busily spending my money. That'll teach me to buy Christmas presents for people.

D'oh! Again. Still, you should be protected- when it happened to me my bank gave me a whacking great overdraft (which they forgot to take away) while they investigated it, and I got everything back again.
At least being phoned by your bank is better than looking at your account on payday and realising that not only has all your pay gone in, but it's also gone out again...

With a credit card they're not spending your money, they're spending the bank's money. Banks are insured; you'll be fine.

yeah, its not so much the money since, as you say, that is all covered by the banks fraud protection (the main reason that I did my online shopping with a credit card in the first place) but more the annoyance of it all and the vague disquiet that at least one of the (supposedly) reputable sites that I visited is compromised in some way.

Ah well - I'd done most of the present shopping anyhow and the last few bits can be picked up in a real shop, and paid for with cold hard cash instead :)

True. In some good (and NZ related) news, One Square Meal are now offering to ship me a crate of OSM bars for 'personal use only'.
