As you may have noticed, I recently privatized my journal, so that only a tiny tiny few of my writings and photos are still visible (no more than 15 or so). I did a google search to see if there were any cached copies of my private entries existing in the world, and lo and behold I came across ljfind.com and ljseek.com, which have both catologued

Put mildly, yeah. If you put it on the Internet, you need to assume it's in the public domain and your grandmother is going to see it.

From what I read, your private posts and such will disappear as the listings are updated over time. You need to make sure that in your LJ options, you choose to *not* be searchable by engines.

I looked at the FAQs on ljseek, and from what I can gather, anything currently marked as private will not show in their engines. If it was public at some prior time, there may be a cached copy still out there. My journal was public until about a year ago, and none of my posts are there. You'll have to wait it out.

Many services like that have a way to remove data, but I don't know about those specifically.

But if you're thinking for the future (i.e., your political career), I wouldn't count on anything. Once something is posted on the Internet, you should assume it's public domain for eternity, even if there's a time when you personally can't find it. Even if you did somehow manage to get them off all well-known public caches, there's always the risk that, say, somebody synced their friends list on their laptop so they could read it later. Thus, it's not the major sites you have to worry about as much as it is the thousands of small systems that ran across your LJ. You may want to strategize about how to deal with the entries in the public rather than hide them. :)

Yes, and there are always those few who save the pictures on their hard drives, and then it may potentially be leaked for eternity.

Hopefully those people saved your picture out of adoration, will forever love you, and would never think to leak them for personal gain. ;)

Yeah, it's a problem if you're planning on a public career and planning on being dishonest about yr past - on the otherhand, by the time you get into public office hopefully attitudes will have changed and everyone will just sigh and roll their eyeballs and say things like, 'That Andy Novak - what a card!'
