Pre-8th Year

The fics are rated in the following way:

⋆⋆⋆ fics I absolutely adore, can’t fault for anything and sometimes find better than the books
⋆⋆ fics I like a lot but they just aren’t as perfect as the ones with ⋆⋆⋆
⋆ fics that are good enough for me to recommend, have original ideas and are very well-written but have something that jarred me

I rate the pre-8th year fics slightly more leniently because most of them really suck, in my opinion. A fic might normally not be up to even 1 star standard for me, but compared to other pre-8th year fics it might be amazing. Take that into consideration.

The Empty House by hollycomb

So this fic..I’m not sure how to review it. It’s well-written and rather well-paced. It sticks to canon portrayal of Draco and Harry which for me is always a big plus. It doesn’t have unnecessary, self-indulgent sex scenes; that makes me a happy girl. It is also pretty much a character study and has quite a good ending.
I think my only complain would be the progression of Harry and Draco’s relationship. There were scenes which were hinted at but never written. There are also some small time jumps. Honestly, I’d rather some of those “missing” scenes were included; that would make “The Empty House” more complete.

Invisible to See by pandarus
Summary: Invisible to See is a novel set in JK Rowling's Harry Potter universe, exploring one possible future for some of the key characters. It was begun in November of 2002 and completed in December of 2003; as such the story was conceived without benefit of The Order of the Phoenix, and cleaves only to prior canon. It is a swashbuckling tale of love, friendship, romance, redemption and vengeance, and of the messy business of coming to terms with the differences between who you are and who other people want you to be. Or, in other word, growing up. It is very, very, very loosely inspired by Pride and Prejudice, among other things.
Word Count: 94,963

Well, if it ain’t the longest summary I have ever encountered. God, I hate reviewing “classics” since I almost never like them.
So what is the situation with “Invisible to See”? It’s...OK. Nothing ground-breaking. It has a great beginning. For about half of the fic I was in love. It was quite a well-done character study of Draco. Then, shit happens. And continues to happen *sighs*.
Can one have way too many unnecessary sex scenes in one fic? Of course, and this one has a particularly long one, which makes no sense to me in the grand scheme of things. And the Draco/Harry subplot comes a bit out of nowhere. I don’t exactly buy it (nothing tops the Cho/Harry scenes; they are bad).
I have a whole mountain of problems with this fic, but it’s still a nice read. That usually is not enough for me to rec a story - I at least need it to be unique in some sense - but the beginning was so good that, in the end, it’s Ok to give it a chance.
