For tu b'shevat, the rabbi brought in a professor from the school's bio department to talk about sustainability and biodiversity. It was a good talk. Besides being a professor, he also has his own farm (he raises sheep). I had a chance to talk with him and it was very interesting ( Read more... )

that sounds like a pretty awesome talk.
my 2 cents on local vs. organic:
i wish i lived in a world where i was usually having to choose between local, organic, or both. but usually, what with not always having time to get to the farmers market, or health food store, i take what i can get. if it has to come from florida, it might as well be organic. or if its from jersey, but not organic, at least it wasn't trucked across country. i agree that both local and organic can have health and environmental benefits, and it probably depends on the type of food which is which.

good luck with composting, let me know if you have any questions. Are you thinking of a pile? Or a container? or not at that stage yet?

I think local vs. organic depends on the particular choice-- I try to avoid things which got flown in from far away, but I think ship and rail travel aren't so bad.

Absolutely agreed on the biodiversity point.
