I think the Obama case is interesting, because he was in fact trailing for a chunk of the campaign and there were calls for change lest he be pounded by Hillary.
More detailed examination of the respective campaigns (not unlike the closer examination of the coke logos) reveals that his team did shake things up; their talent, IMO, was in maintaining the perception of consistency and purpose even as they changed tactics during the early to middle phases of the primaries, etc...
