He looks at his hands, at the strong tendons under scarred skin. He clenches them into fists, remembers the feel of bone shattering under them, of throats crushed by them and of cool steel as he wielded his knives and guns. He remembers all the rage and pain that fuelled his need to use them again, and again, and again. It’s still there, under the surface along with the resentment he feels for his own weakness. He never should have given in.
A hand reaches up from the bed behind him and forcibly tugs at him. “Stop tormenting yourself, Jay.” The calm voice breathes, offering forgiveness and understanding he doesn’t deserve. “Come back to bed.”
With a sigh, he allows the other to pull him back down under the covers. For one more night, he will let himself believe that things really can be okay.
