We figured we just forgot what variety of apple that was and hoped someone would know.

never tasted Empire, Spartan or Mutsu. I better look for them next time in the grocery, I am curious now :)

I think you should be able to find Empire in the grocery. Not sure about Mutsu, and I'm pretty sure Spartan isn't a commercial variety.
