Many of the world's faiths believe in an evolution of the sentient being: you arrive at Understanding only through experience, and examination of experience.
This may take many incarnations.
Much of the world is what it is because we have greedy people, foolish people, unconcerned people in our midst.
The Bodhisattva Vow of the Mahayana School is, roughly, to forestall one's own release until all sentient beings are liberated, i.e., until we can somehow aid people to get beyond greed and such.
We'll be a looooong time comin' back, that's sure.
But it's important to realize that one attains understanding only through diligent self-effort; much of the sadness in the world comes about as the result of actions of people who have yet to realize this premise.
