Some of the things you suggested that I change were conscious choices on my part. In case you're interested...
I didn't want to use an ellipse or a dash to indicate an unfinished thought or interruption because I didn't want the reader to have any warning that an interruption was coming. I wanted it to be abrupt and harsh, with a train of thought still slightly unfinished, just like a real interruption.
As for rifle vs. riffle, they are actually two differenat words, even though many peoploe have begun to use "rifle" to mean the same thing as "riffle."
