I followed your progress link and took the footprint test.

As far as Americans go, I'm doing pretty good. And all through living a comfortable lifestyle for myself (meaning most of my choices are made for my own health and welfare and budget restrictions rather than for the welfare of the planet).

CATEGORY ACRES
FOOD 3
MOBILITY 1.2
SHELTER 1.7
GOODS/SERVICES 2
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 8

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.8 PLANETS.

good deal. mine is way higher, mostly because of the size of my house and the travel i do to and from work.

i forgot the footprint quiz was on redefining progress. when i wrote the story i didn't have access to the internets, so i was using links from my bookmarks.

The expenses of recovering from any disaster or wreck is a valid part of GDP. The bain of progress, and employment, is stasis. When a storm such as Katrina destroys, the rebuilding effort usually results in better, and more efficient, structures. One of the culture differences between America and Europe is America's willingness to knock down and rebuild. Just look at Las Vegas. Old hotels are imploded and new ones built. This results in far better structures than simple remodeling. Associated with this is a huge recycle program to take the scrap from destroyed buildings and convert it into new materials for the next build. Finally, this willingness to destroy and rebuild provides, literally, millions of jobs that require a high level of skill.

Relating this to your own field, if software was now perfect and meeting every need, you would be blogging full time.
