leonardo's laptop

the second book i read while traveling is called leonardo's laptop. the back cover asked with dubious breathlessness: "what kind of laptop would leonardo davinci design?" the author used this byline to discus a range of computer interface issues. like most authors writing about this topic, he takes interface developers to task for failing to ( Read more... )

I can think of countless science fiction movies where computers have taken over the planet and have eradicated or enslaved humanity because (ai) has become too self sufficient or self aware. It seems to be a very common theme in hollywood. As a non-computer scientist I sort of live in the unser interface world where all I want is hardware that will continue to work in the harsh environments I want to visit and work. An example would be a surface mapping system that would have a differential GPS node and software that would sinc with Arcview so that I could draw and create geologic maps right from the field. I would be a very happy man if only I could meet someone with the knowhow and the patent to do so.

This only makes sense to you because you work in a unix environment with no discernable UI. :) If you were in windows like the rest of us you'd see that UI development has been taking off lately. The latest versions of visual studio are a pleasure to develop in ( ... )

i don't think i could ever use an ide again. i'm not even sure what it is, cause watching you work with one is pretty amazing. probably because ui responsiveness on unix is nowhere near what it is on windows, i shudder thinking about watching my window redraw...

i do admit hanging out with the systems developers warps one's perception of computer science.

except there are more of us than there are of you... (more internal programming jobs than commercial ones, that is.)
