That is certainly a distressing article. It's really unbelievable that such highly educated people are being so hateful to that girl, and it's astonishing that her family had to go into hiding. I don't mind saying: the Chinese government scares me. The Party is bugnuts.
Tibet is a very touchy subject in China. I know an ESL teacher who brought up the subject one day. After class one of her Chinese students went up to her and scolded her for calling the area Tibet. "It's China," he said. "You should call it China." And they also berated the girl from Taiwan for saying she was Taiwanese, not Chinese. China has control issues. :/
I agree. It's good to be aware of these issues. There seem to be a lot of scary hatreds on Asia--China/Tibet and Korea/Japan, for one. (Well, South Korea, I don't know about North Korea.)
