You and I Both

"One dozen red velvet cupcakes coming up!"

Junmyeon smiles as he leans against the counter, watching as Lu Han got the box for a dozen cupcakes and started filling them in with the red confection he's always loved so much.

He's been coming to this cupcake cafe since he was in university. It's always been one of those student hotspots, where everyone liked to go to after classes to hang out or unwind and just forget all about tough classes and boring professors. It's also quite popular with the dating crowd.

"Here you go," Lu Han hands the box of red velvet cupcakes across the counter just as the bell of the door shop rings, signaling a customer.

"Thanks, man," Junmyeon says as he hands Lu Han his payment. "You've done well with the place."

Lu Han beams because owning his own cafe, as well as his own business, has always been a dream since they were still in university together. So when the previous owners of the shop decided to sell it, Lu Han immediately jumped at the offer and took it as his own.

"He says that every time he comes here," Sehun, his business partner, says as he comes out from the kitchen. "And you always still eat it up."

"Well, it's a nice thing to hear," Lu Han says, shoving Sehun a little. "Besides, Junmyeon never lies about anything."

"Junmyeon?"

Junmyeon freezes at the too familiar voice.

"Baekhyun!" Lu Han and Sehun chorus before Junmyeon can even turn around.

They say you can never really forget your first love. And when Junmyeon does turn around, sees a guy around his height with beautifully styled dark brown hair, a face with a mixture of prettiness and handsomeness in it, marked by perfectly applied eyeliner, he finds that he still does remember everything in clear and vivid detail.

"Baekhyun," he greets him, a genuine smile forming on his face.

Baekhyun opens his mouth to say something, but takes a deep breath instead. "It's been so long since we've seen each other," he says all of this in an excited rush. "How have you been?"

"Table two just got freed up," Lu Han suggests.

Baekhyun looks hopefully at Junmyeon.

Coincidences are a funny thing. Junmyeon clearly remembers the last time he and Baekhyun were in this cafe together. Junmyeon had just finished a major exam for one of his medical classes and was looking to have a cupcake and coffee or two to ease his stress. He had been in the middle of drinking his second coffee when Baekhyun finally arrived. As soon as Baekhyun said hi, Junmyeon already knew what was coming.

They broke up that afternoon.

"How have you been?" Baekhyun asks, wrapping his slim fingers around his warm mug of coffee. He was never really one who enjoyed the cold too much, much less wintertime.

"I've been good," Junmyeon answers. "I'm on my third year of residency at Seoul hospital. It's been really stressful and tiring--"

"But you love it," Baekhyun knowingly finishes for him. He smiles when Junmyeon nods in agreement.

"I do," Junmyeon repeats and confirms. "The patients I handle, the kids, they're like little sunshines that I always forget that I'm even working when I'm there. You just forget the long hours after a while."

Baekhyun smiles warmly and reaches out to lightly and familiarly squeeze his forearm. "It must be tough when a case doesn't work out," he indirectly asks.

"All jobs have their difficulty," Junmyeon skirts the issue. He's never been one to handle the death of a patient well. He shakes his head and chuckles. "Either way, I don't really see myself doing anything else."

"I know," Baekhyun says. "You always were going to be a great doctor."

Junmyeon knows it was his doctorate career that made Baekhyun break up with him. Because, while Junmyeon craved stability, wanting to find a position in one of the best hospitals in Seoul and build his life there, Baekhyun wanted to get out of the country and see what else was out there for him in the world.

"How's everything going with you? When did you get back?" Junmyeon asks this time. When they parted ways three years ago, he never did quite hear much from him, except for the occasional postcards on special occasions like birthdays and thanksgiving or Christmas.

"Just the other day," Baekhyun says, smiling a little. "I just need to get copies of some documents from my parents. I'm part of this music company in London and it's so amazing," he gushes. "It's really a dream come true."

"I'm glad," Junmyeon sincerely tells him. He's always known that Baekhyun's been destined for things far greater than Seoul could offer him. "You deserve it."

"That means a lot to me, coming from you," Baekhyun says. He pauses for a bit and takes a deep breath. "I can't believe we saw each other here, of all places," he chuckles in amazement.

Junmyeon laughs. "Well, I wouldn't have wished for it any other way actually," he admits. "You won't believe it, but they still make those sticky peanut butter cupcakes."

"No way!" Baekhyun giggles, eyes wide with mirth. "Those things are disgusting. Like they stick to the top of your mouth and takes forever to come off..." he trails away, shuddering. Slowly, he smiles and lifts his eyes towards Junmyeon in mischievousness. "Although," he continues slowly, "you always did know how to get them off."

"I did," Junmyeon smirks. "I think that's the only good thing about those cupcakes."

Baekhyun shakes his head and leans back on his seat. "Gosh, I missed this place," he says as he looks around. "Like, it's changed, but at the same time, it's the same. I can still imagine us studying for our finals in that corner over there." He nods to one of the corners of the shop, where a girl is sitting, her eyes trained seriously on the pages of her book.

"No, no, if I remember correctly, that would be me studying," Junmyeon interjects, pointing at himself before pointing at Baekhyun, "and you humming songs to yourself."

"That was me studying!" Baekhyun makes a face at him. "I was a music major, of course I hummed songs to myself."

"Please," Junmyeon counters teasingly. "You were a weirdo."

"A weirdo that you loved, so there," Baekhyun retorts back, poking his tongue out at him.

"Glad to see that you haven't changed," Junmyeon laughs.

As Baekhyun bursts into laughter at this, something warm swells in Junmyeon, something familiar, something he hasn't felt in a really long time. It clinches a tiny bit at his heart and then it goes away.

"We were good together, weren't we," Baekhyun comments in nostalgia.

Junmyeon knows he's thinking back on all those cereal breakfasts they had together, late night cuddles and those times where they would run around the apartment and try to tickle each other when the stress of university got too much for them. They had those laundry days, where Junmyeon accidentally dyes all their clothes to red because he forgot to remove his favorite red shirt in the mix. And that time when Baekhyun forgot his scarf and felt so cold that Junmyeon had to hurry to Baekhyun's building just so he can give Baekhyun the scarf that he was wearing, not caring whether he'd be the one who'd feel cold throughout the day. Junmyeon remembers having to memorize Baekhyun's musical sheets because he needed someone to help him review, and he remembers Baekhyun going through all the medical terms, helping him memorize them.

They were together all four years of university together and, like any other couple, it was a rollercoaster ride. But, for some reason, all Junmyeon can remember are the highs. The lows were so easy to shrug off because it was one of the best times of his life. Baekhyun was one of his great loves.

Junmyeon returns the affection. "Yes," he agrees. "Yes, we were."

There's a gush of wind and a tinkle of a bell. A tall guy walks into the cafe and makes a beeline for the table that he and Baekhyun are sitting at.

"Baek," he taps Baekhyun's shoulder with a large hand.

Baekhyun looks up and the smile that appears on his face is brighter than anything Junmyeon's ever seen. He stands up as Junmyeon looks up at the guy as well.

"Junmyeon, this is Chanyeol," Baekhyun introduces them happily, "Chanyeol, this is Junmyeon."

Chanyeol smiles and immediately raises a hand to shake Junmyeon's. "Finally," he says, his voice deep and sturdy. "I've been looking forward to meeting you."

Junmyeon laughs in surprise as he glances curiously at Baekhyun, who merely shrugs. "It's nice to meet you, Chanyeol," he replies.

"Yeah," Chanyeol says, still smiling. "I realize I have a lot to live up to." Junmyeon's eyes widen further and Chanyeol chuckles. "He still talks about you."

"You're also my best friend, Junmyeon," Baekhyun elaborates, reaching out and squeezing his hand. "Four years is no joke."

"No joke," Junmyeon repeats and the surge of affection that he has for Baekhyun rises. Then he realizes that it's always been there and probably always will be there because Baekhyun will always have a special place in his heart.

"We should go," Baekhyun then says. "But it was really, really nice to see you again." Without warning, he takes a step forward and wraps his arms around Junmyeon in a tight hug. "I missed you."

Junmyeon closes his eyes as he hugs him back. "Me too," he whispers.

"I'll call you before we leave," Baekhyun promises with a smile.

Then with a wave, he walks out of the cafe with his hand in Chanyeol's.

-

"You okay?"

Junmyeon looks up as finds Lu Han seated at the chair that Baekhyun had vacated. Lu Han raises an eyebrow at the dwindling red velvet cupcakes in the box that he'd ordered earlier.

"I'm fine," Junmyeon promises him.

"Are you sure?" Lu Han presses, concerned. "Because I know how you and Baekhyun were in love, I've seen you two together and even if it's been four years, there's still has to be some sting, knowing that he's moved on."

Junmyeon chuckles. "I'm sure," he repeats. "I cannot bring myself to be upset over anything because he's got the life that he's always wanted and he's happy."

"Junmyeon," Lu Han starts again.

"Not all love stories are meant to last forever," Junmyeon continues, a wistful smile on his face. "I thought Baekhyun and I were meant for that at some point, but it's really okay that weren't. It was worth it while it lasted."

Lu Han reaches out and squeezes his hand in comfort before getting up to join Sehun behind the counter.

At that moment, someone comes into the cafe; someone whom Junmyeon thinks has a perfectly sculpted face and a very attractive catlike smile.

"Hi," he greets Junmyeon, taking a seat beside him. “Was that Baekhyun I just ran into?”

“Yes,” Junmyeon smiles.

“Wow, his boyfriend is like an overgrown child,” Jongdae comments thoughtfully and Junmyeon can’t help but laugh. Jongdae shoots him a knowing look. “Are you okay?”

Junmyeon rolls his eyes at him, reaching for his hand. “Of course I am,” he says, tugging him closer for a kiss. “Come here.”

“Good,” Jongdae satisfactorily states after the kiss. “Because I really am much better looking than he is.”

Junmyeon laughs.

Author's Notes:
Another prompt from seoulfulness: "We're not in love anymore but when I see you I smile because I only
remember those small details that made us once happy. We weren't forever but it's ok, really, because it was worth it while it lasted."

My first time writing Baekhyun and Suho so I hope it turned out alright. Anyway, I wasn't sure how to tag this because this wasn't really supposed to be angsty at all, but I ended up feeling angsty while writing it so I thought maybe I should add that. Not sure about the fluff. :))

Anyway, hope you liked this. Comments are welcome. :)
