Ok - so I'm watching 6x16 and I've hit upon something that's been bothering me.

Y'know, I *knew* I was annoyed about something, and I think you've nailed the reason completely. Guess I missed it because I was watching the shows in real time and not bringing my critical skills to bear. (I mean, for NCIS I tend to be "oooh, DUCKY!" and "way to go, Abbs!" and "good call, Tony!" and "daaawww, Tim," and "you kick ass, Ziva!" and "GIIIIIBBBBSSSSS!", rather than a more intellectual analysis of the characters and plot.)

::wanders off to ponder::

I mean, it's like whenever they need someone to be shit at something or to look stupid or say something dumb, they pick Tony now.

And there was a certain amount of it before, but it seems to have spiralled out of control.

I've JUST started watching this show this week, and I agree with the absolute addictiveness of it. Sad to hear about season 6, though, because Tony is bad ass.

I'm not saying it's bad? It's still good and I still love Tony. But it just feels like they've gone a little too far with the messing with Tony and poking fun at him.

But dude - NCIS is AWESOME.

Which eps are your favorite in the series, if I may ask?

Oh god, that's a hard one. I dont' think I can specify, really. I just sort of love them in general!

Season one was definitely when McGee started being in them more. I always loved him. After that...well, I don't really ship NCIS any more so anything goes with me!

Exactly. It comes to something when you're WANTING a break to the "team" thing to save one of the characters. I've never been able to pick a favourite or least fav NCIS member because they were all so awesome. But I'm starting to be annoyed by both Tony AND Gibbs right now!

So I don't actually remember much about that episode specifically, but the end of season 6 in general... Tony is kind of massively awesome. To me, anyway. And I could tell you why but it would be spoilery and that could be sad. It's in that same "surprising competence" sort of way.

But! He does get better. At least in one sense. If you're me.

Oh god, what he does with the thing with that person at that time? He is fucking AMAZING. And still utterly utterly Tony. No one else could have got that reaction. Just. Brilliant ( ... )

I think it's not so much Tony doesn't get to be awesome because he still has his hunches and his logic leaps and stuff, it's the whole ONLY GIBBS WILL DO.

Actually, it's both. Tony does still have some awesome, but it's so greatly overshadowed by the "let's make him look like an idiot!" that it's FRUSTRATING. I just watched 6x17 and the thing with the horse? I mean, really. That's not about Gibbs being awesome, that's about making Tony look like an idiot. Period. And I hate it.

But, of course, at the same time, there is this increase in Gibbs-only-ness. I mean, it's always been about how Gibbs is the awesomest. And I know that you came into watching the show from a totally different perspective so I can see why that show trope wouldn't work for you. But it did work. Before ( ... )

I think you will like this vid. I know I did.

*Gibbs-slaps writers and feeds Tony lots of oily fish*

I agree with you, with the difference that I have never liked DiNozzo and would cheerfully see him gone, because everyone else is so interesting. But putting that aside, hee, I suspect the format of the show, with Gibbs the know-all-smack all in the head, is a part of the Donald Bellesario problem. The producer/creator of this show is repeating the pattern he had with JAG that only the lead character could be right and smart all the time. Everyone else screwed up, and thus were more interesting. The problem with DiNozzo is that she show needs EITHER Gibbs or DiNozzo, and as long as they have Gibbs, Tony will be an also-ran. There's really no need for his character; ideally they'd have a character that was a combo of him and McGee, geeky but handsome ( ... )

as long as they have Gibbs, Tony will be an also-ran.

And, see, I never used to have a problem with that. But it used to be that Tony was competent and good at his job, but Gibbs was BETTER. Now they've very firmly put Tony in the realm of "useless butt-monkey."

I understand the reasons that you don't much like Tony, even though I personally (usually) love him. At least before I felt that his ribbing of McGee etc. came from a place of love, you know? That even McGee knew that Tony actually really loved him and was more ribbing to get attention and, you know, hair-pulling.

But because they haven't dialed it down, or increased Tony appreciating McGee's skills as WELL as ribbing him about being new, it now just comes off as a) a shitty, over-used joke and b) mean and bullying.

If you check the comments above, Cat's linked to a vid someone's done that basically covers all of the things we've talked about. You should check it out! Because it quite nicely covers stuff.

(And it didn't come off as squee-harshing, don't worry!)
