I take a deep breath, and try to subdue the fast pulse racing through my veins. I’m walking on air, still on that floaty cloud of oblivious ecstasy that came from being made a summoner. I feel as if I’m in a trance, finally ready for my life as a summoner to start.
The circle in the ground has been there for as long as the oldest temple records show, a testament to the countless others who have stood in the centre as I do now, and prepared for the beginning of their new role in life. The summoning of their first aeon.
My hands settle on my staff, and I let my body slip into the stance that training has made automatic. I steel myself, some of the euphoria leaving me as I prepare to perform the act I’ve waited so long to do. It’s a simple act now that the fayth have heard my prayer, and I can feel the familiar hymn vibrating through my staff as I focus on calling the aeon.
It appears in the sky in a burst of light and I feel overawed by its power. It is bird-shaped, with powerful wings and talons, and its magnificence scares me a bit. I approach it tentatively, and watch nervously as it rears its head before leaning down for me to touch it.
People say that the first time you hold your newborn baby, you form an instant bond of trust and love. I don’t know about babies, but as I gently stroke the feathers on the aeon’s neck I know that I can trust it and I will always have a friend in it. And to me that’s the important thing, that I can count on it.
