It's National Coming Out day and I've discovered I have feelings about this that aren't entirely positive. So that's interesting. Bringing this over from the tumblr machine (where I regularly eschew capitalization. Sorry about that

AMEN, especially the last part. I don't care if you're straight, gay, bi, whatever. If I like you as a person for what's on the inside, I could care less who you choose to love, as long as you are happy. I understand National Coming Out day is supposed to be a support system, but shouldn't we push more for a day that people don't feel the need to "come out"? You bring up so many good, thought-provoking points!
I know what you mean. It would be nice if we could get to the point where it isn't necessary to come out. And also, the "coming out" narrative people are familiar with isn't the case for everyone- sexuality can be fluid, and it's hard to come out with your sexual orientation when you're still figuring it out yourself.
I really feel like sexuality is fluid for the majority of the population, whether they want to admit it or not. I use the label lesbian mostly because it's easier than saying "I'm attracted to whom I'm attracted to regardless of gender but I generally find myself drawn more toward women" because that is something that a lot of people have real trouble processing.
Totally agree. I have had this conversation with my mom oh so many times and she just can not be convinced. Which is why I hope for my kids it is easier for them to just be with whoever they want when they want. When I was starting college I had a really, really hard time feeling comfortable with men. If I had felt like saying, "I think I'm going to date this girl for awhile." wouldn't have been OMG such a big deal I probably would have been a lot happier at the time.
Not that Bert should worry, either. I'm sure I would have found him in the end either way.
I told you I'm totally stalking you, btw. Checking your LJ a day after your post. I swear, it has nothing to do with putting off loading the dishwasher.
I agree. I do feel like it pushes people to come out and I think people should stay in the closet for as long as they feel they need to. I try nott o pay attentoin to this day.
