He wore the leathern braccae he had from the day at the amphitheatre, and an expression of unrelenting glumness that had settled stone-hard on his face when he had enquired what sort of weapons they were to use, and Marcus had informed him that they would begin by fighting hand-to-hand.
I can just imagine him thinking about Romans and their stupid ideas. ♥
lithe as a bull-leaper from the ancient court of Minos
…I would pay good money for art of Esca as a bull-leaper, fyi.
“You asked me to fight with you,” Esca said, his voice rasping. “I am, the way I know how.” He tilted his head again to pop another bone in his neck, and with a final vehement look in Marcus's direction, he got to his feet.
Oh yes, yes. Esca's fighting in the movie is so very much about survival, none of these "legitimate moves" or anything.
Now was not the time to think on how he wished to touch him without guile, without deceit, without the pretext of combat. And most of all ( ... )

As always, your writing is absolutely gorgeous: I love how the weather sets the mood for the wrestling scene and underscores the ever increasing tension between Marcus and Esca (and dear lord, you write gently simmering UST as no one else).
My favourite part was this:
For a soldier, the glory of Rome must take precedence to affection, even to love. Honour and discipline formed the very foundations of victory, and had to be maintained at all times.
Marcus could tell that Esca would stubbornly lie there all day rather than admit defeatGuh this just speaks volumes about both their characters in the space of a few sentences: Esca's pride and stubbornness - he will remain undefeated until he chooses to submit, no matter how dire the situation, and Marcus who is just as proud and just as stubborn but in a different way, who is always deeply conscious of his duties and his honour but who is already struggling so hard not to give in to what he feels in his heart ( ... )

Ha ha, oh wow, I love writing about weather to an almost unhealthy degree. I BLAME BEING BRITISH - IT MEANS I HAVE A WEATHER!KINK *g*
And YES, you have it exactly right, how they both have their own brand of stubbornness and for very different reasons. There's actually a conversation I've written between them WAYYY down the line in the story, where they discuss exactly this between them, and it is pretty much a paraphrasing of your analysis right there of Esca - he will remain undefeated until he chooses to submit, no matter how dire the situation. YOU ARE AWESOME AND I ♥ YOU :D

AHAHAHAHA WELL THEN I BLAME BEING NORWEGIAN FOR ALWAYS NOTICING WHEN PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT THE WEATHER. WE ARE ALL OBSESSED WITH THE WEATHER LOL.
