The Queen's Pirate - Sir Francis Drake

May 08, 2010 11:40

So, I've got one more picspam for you all from my stay at Will Turner's cottage. Well, strictly speaking, this is on the way back home from the cottage. I stopped off on the way at Buckland Abbey on the edge of Dartmoor, the home of Sir Francis Drake.

What an amazing place. Coming from Florida, the land of little history, where something older that 1850 is to be gawked at, I simply adore these glimpses into the ancient (or not so ancient) past.

One day I plan to visit and see all these places, but for now, I will have to live vicariously through you. :)

I am desperately hoping that there is some way that you'll be able to come and stay when Deedee does in the Autumn, so that we can all go and visit some of the treasures dear old England has to offer :) I think that knowing that I can share these places with you, and with all my friends in this way, makes it even more fun when I travel to places. It's always so nice to think, 'Oh, so-and-so would love that,' and then be able to show it to them later.

There are many days, though, (such as this one, which is rainy and stupidly cold for May at 8 degrees C) when I'd be willing to trade up being surrounded by old buildings for a good hearty dose of Florida sunshine and warm breezes!

Be careful what you wish for, it may someday come true. :P

If it helps, it is not so balmy out, more like muggy. Dog breath days. And warm, staying in the 70s F during the nights now.

We shall have to trade, you visit here and lounge by the pool and visit all the sights around Florida, and I'll come crash at your pad and you can tout me all around London and vicinity. Do we have an accord?

(btw, DD will be here June 2nd, so start packing.) :)

*sob* Oh, I am so, SO tempted, but I'll be in Bath on the 2nd June with another friend (which will be great fun and no doubt will occasion another picspam) - but YES, YES, in the future, YES, we most definitely have an accord for exchange visits. I'd love to have you here :D

another glorious share, love.
you remind me that there are things here in my own county which, while perhaps not as old, have meaning nonetheless, and which i have either not visited in a long time, or never been to, despite meaning to.
perhaps i will make this summer the summer of staying home to get to know my home again, before venturing off into the world again as soon as i can.

That is indeed a fine and noble plan, my darling. I think that's a wonderful idea. Once you start looking for the things on your doorstep, you find more, and more, and more. It's lovely sometimes to look at the nearby, at the small details, at the familiar with new, fresh eyes every now and then, before going out into the big wide wilderness for a taste of something completely new :)

So was I :) I felt glutted on the sensory overload I'd had all that week. My brain still hasn't quite recovered, but in a good way *g*

I see it's been good inspiration-wise, too.

Yes! I finally had the time, space, and right frame of brain to finish up a few things I'd started. Feels good :)

Too bad this is so far out of the way from our September plans. :-(
Not that where we will be going is *so* bad. LOL

Yeah, I know. I honestly wish I could just travel all round the UK and visit everywhere, and spend time there to really enjoy it. Lol, yeah, Glastonbury and Stonehenge (and Bath XD) are passable, I suppose *g*

Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Bath and London. Sounds like a very busy 6 days. Will there be alcohol? LOL

Grandpa had chickens that size regularly. I can't tell you what breed it is (though it sort of looks a cross between his Dominiques and Rhode Island Reds), but I remember having to help clip their wings and build their pens, so I know they were pretty large. Maybe it's just an American chicken that ended up across the ocean. ;-)

I really, really had to rein in the very childish urge to run after that chicken and try to catch it to give it a hug. It just looked so big and soft and cuddly, though!

I think they might have told me to leave, though, if I'd done that ;)
