Alright, so for the past year or so I've been using Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner - their Length and Strength, Sleek and Shine, Shine Burst, and Wonder Waves - with the occasional dash of other brands

I swear by my Sheer Blonde by John Frieda. It's the only shampoo I've ever had where I can KEEP using it and it never makes my hair greasy, my head itch, etc. I never have to switch brands. I do use a straightener, otherwise my hair is super frizzy (it gets frizzy anyway, so I keep the straightening mild). Just get the appropriate color.
Also? To add shine to the hair, rinse with cool/cold water.
John Frieda, huh? *notes that down for the next shopping trip* Garinier Fructis never does that unless, for whatever, reason, I can't get to a shower over several days (I only wash my hair every other day, because otherwise the amount of money I'd be spending on hair stuff would be even worse). I also never condition my scalp except for a bit of leave-in stuff, and that tends to help me cut down on grease.
Part of the reason I don't use straighteners much is because I almost always have my hair pulled back in either a braid or a figure-eight bun with hair sticks, so I don't leave it fully down very often. *sheepish*
Ooh, I didn't know the part about the cool/cold water, though I feel vaguely like I've heard it somewhere before. Meh, I didn't remember. I'll try that now, thanks! =D
I wish I could skip days. If I don't wash my hair for a day (even if I shower!), particularly in summer, my head will start to itch SO BAD. X_x If I don't use shampoo and conditioner for two days? My head gets really greasy. I have the weirdest hair.
Honestly? The whole ordeal I go through for my hair? Back when they made the other types, the best combo I could find was Sheer Blonde moisturizing shampoo, rinse. Then use Sheer Blonde lustrous conditioner (I think it was called that, helped strengthen hair), rinse in cold. Spray in John Frienda Daily Nourishment conditioning spray. (Helps with tangles and hair strength.) Dry hair. Straighten hair. Pea-sized amount of John Frieda Secret Finish, spread over hair. Tah-Dah, compliments abound. Better in winter, because my hair's less frizzy. Until I come in contact with static. Oi. My enemy...
My usual routine - at least at the moment - is shampoo, spend at least a minute scratching and scrubbing and rubbing at my scalp to get rid of dead skin and grease, then rinse. Conditioner, but only on the length, from about nape down, and then finger-comb out the worst of the tangles. That also gets rid of a lot of loose hair then instead of leaving it to just be shed. *sheds like a mofo* And then rinse. I'll have to try it with cool water. Then twist up on top of my head for soap and a washcloth, because I have to make sure to scrub my back and shoulders after conditioning my hair or else I get zits galore. Rinse off everything again, then towel-dry, finger-comb in Garnier leave-in conditioner, again mostly into the length, then comb out. I don't blow dry or straighten or anything. ^^;;
The leave-in conditioner has helped keep my hair a lot stronger, and it does tend to help with the shine.
I've been using Pantene ProV Thick and Full and it's.. made my hair really curly. x3 It's pretty awesome, if you want to try out natural curls. My hair is slightly wavy normally.
*sheepish* In the past I've avoided things that add body like the plague, because my hair's always had body. It's getting less so now that it's longer, because the weight keeps dragging it down, so maybe I'll try that. *notes it down* The other issue is that I generally keep it braided back or in a partial bun, so I only rarely have my hair fully down. *sheepish*
Try these: http://www.iherb.com/J-R-Liggett-s or something without sodium laureth sulfate. SLS is what strips your hair of it's natural, GOOD oils and these bars are free of it. This coupon code (LOT925) might still work to give you $5 off your first order from iherb.com. :) Actually, even with SLS-free shampoo, it's better to only wash 1-2 times a week and use conditioner or something in between... conditioner actually has stuff in it that helps clean your hair, and if you're pretty thorough about scrubbing your scalp to help it along, it does a great job and your hair smells awesome. :) Yes, I'm a shampoo-free freak (well, not totally...) and my hair has never been better. I have really thick, but VERY fine, short, light brown/blonde, STRAIGHT hair, and this has given it so much more bounce and shine. I'm even thinking of growing it out now that it doesn't stick so flat to my head! It's also stopped the scalp itching I had problems with. Sorry to ramble, just

Hehe, it's okay. *grins* I completely understand the desire to share hair stories. ^_^
I'll have to check that all out! Like I said, I wash my hair every other day, or every third day, so I don't really shampoo too often or anything. The whole "stripping hair of natural oils" is one of the reason I mostly just shampoo my scalp, to get rid of the excess stuff, and then let the suds rinse through the rest of my hair, because that cleans it. Then condition the length, because my scalp always has enough oils and stuff left that adding more just makes it greasy and nasty far too soon.
When my hair was long (I use this as a relative term - it was down to the bottom of my shoulder blades, nowhere NEAR ass-length), I used Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship. I smells scrumptious and it made my hair really soft. :)
*giggles* I often swap hair care brands every once in a while, especially if I'm running low on money for other stuff, and Herbal Essences is one of the brands I grab. I'll have to try that kind! ^_^
