Yeouch. :\ Sounds like Beauty and the Beast: Confused, Pretentious, Badly-Screwed-Up Fanficcer Version. I thought directors were better than this in 2014. Sorry you had to sit through that.
"I understand that Beauty and the Beast has been retold many times,"
It's also been explored in countless different cultures in countless different ways. I remember a class I took where I learned to tell a story of a princess who is stuck in a castle with an old gray being until he invites her to cut his head off and get all his gold and jewels(!)
There's even an American take on the tale where the "beast" comes in the form of a giant bullfrog.
Maybe it's time directors explored some of these other takes on the story?

Wow, which country is that from? I’ve never heard of that version.

You could say the same about a bunch of other fairytales, like “Cinderella” (which has versions in China, Zimbabwe, etc.). It would be neat if film adaptations of those were made.
I guess one problem with making film adaptations of so many different versions of the story may be that these stories which used to be in the public domain would come to be treated like brands (which is one reason why not everyone's so hot on the Disney versions, good though they are).
