Last night, I went with gracie_musica and our friend Tasha to a live solo bass show put on by my teacher and a guest bassist. I really like what your past teacher said about music as noise. That's something I came to appreciate in an interview I did with BB last year when he said he couldn't stand so-called background music, something I've subsequently read of in other musicians. He was like: "What are we doing here? Are we talking? If so, that music is distracting. If we're listening to music, then it's not loud enough to appreciate properly." I've always felt that way myself (always turn the stereo off in the car as soon as I have company, unless we're just not in a talking mood perhaps but even then sometimes the silences are often meaningful too as I've been learning to appreciate anew of late), just never been able to articulate it so eloquently.
