Summary: Yami gave himself every chance to prove that his feelings for Yugi weren't something other than friendship, but when Yugi's the only person he can smile for, he knows he can't hide from the truth.
Disclaimer: Oh stop rubbin it in, sheesh...
Background info: This is just a one-shot but there's some background stuff that I know y'all are smart enough to work out from the fic, so forgive my insulting your intelligence, but I'm slightly OC and want to explain stuff anyway. ^^;;; Basics: Joey bugged Yami a whole lot about how he didn't have a girlfriend. Yami was all uncomfortable because he of course only ever thinks about Yugi, so he bet Joey that he'd have a girlfriend in one month. The one month is now over. And let's see what happened...
“…four…five.” Yami slapped the last bill down into Joey’s palm. “Five thousand yen, there you go.”
Joey pocketed the money with a grin. “I have to say Yami, I’m amazed.”
Yami frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean? You know I wouldn’t cheat you.”
“No, no, I didn’t mean about payment. I knew you’d pay up if you lost, I never thought you’d try to cheat me. I mean I’m just amazed that you lost the bet in the first place.” Joey shrugged. “You’re such a chick magnet. Seriously, none of them called you back for a second date?”
“Seriously.” Yami replied, not meeting Joey’s eyes.
“Really?”
“Joey, we’ve been over this!” Yami sounded impatient now. “No, none of them called me back, therefore I am still girlfriend-less, hence the reason you’re now richer, okay?”
“Completely amazing.” Joey was still muttering. “A rich, world-famous duelist, with some pretty hot looks and a bad-boy personality most girls would die for and a whole slew of fangirls around the world, and yet not a single girl you could find here wanted to be your girlfriend. There’s just no God, eh?”
Yami shrugged uncomfortably, wishing Joey would drop the subject.
Luckily…or perhaps unluckily…they were interrupted at this moment by Yugi, who had just emerged from the school and saw them, and now eyed the both of them suspiciously and asked, “What’s going on?”
“Nothing.” Yami replied quickly. “Really Yugi, it’s not important-“
“Yami just lost a bet.” Joey piped up.
Yami glared at him.
“A bet? A bet about what?” Yugi asked, blinking.
“Well Yami’s never had a girlfriend, but he kept telling me he could easily find one if he wanted, and he bet he’d have one and be in a relationship in a month. But here’s the deadline, and he’s still single.” Joey shook his head. “I was sure I’d lose this one too.”
Yami shrugged again, plainly not interested in talking about it, and Yugi glanced back and forth between them for a second, looking deep in thought.
Joey slung his backpack over his shoulder. “Well, I’ve got to be going anyway. See you guys later!” he waved and headed off down the road. Yami turned to head home as well, when Yugi asked,
“Hey, Yami, can I walk with you?”
Yami turned, looking surprised. Yugi’s house was the opposite direction of his own, so he was confused, but perfectly fine with the request. “Oh…sure!” he replied, struggling not to ask why. They fell into step in silence, and Yami had to keep fighting back asking Yugi what was up, because Yugi still looked deep in thought, yet said nothing. And just when he’d accepted that he’d never know what was on Yugi’s mind, Yugi spoke up.
“Yami…what Joey said, was it true?”
“Was what true?”
“Was it true that you couldn’t find a single girl that wanted to go out with you a second time? Because although it was hardly poetic, he has a point about you being a chick-magnet. You’re famous, you’re young, you’re good-looking, you’re popular…you can’t tell me you didn’t find at least one fangirl in this town.” Yugi was now giving him a penetrating look that Yami knew well…it was a look that plainly said there was no point in lying, because Yugi would see right through it.
He sighed. “Okay, fine, you’re right. The truth is that they all wanted to have a second date.” He shrugged uncomfortably. “It just happened that I forgot to give them my number and I…accidentally lost theirs.”
“So in other words, you’re the one that avoided the second date.” Yugi translated dryly.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Why?” Yami repeated.
“Yes, why? Why didn’t you accept the second date? They couldn’t have all been that horrible! And I know you hate to lose bets so I’m sure you didn’t lose on purpose.”
“No, they weren’t horrible, it was just…” Yami trailed off. “I just didn’t…feel anything…inside for them. They were all different people, and perfectly nice people I’m sure, but I felt nothing for any of them.”
“Nothing as in…?”
“Nothing as in nothing. Most of them couldn’t even make me smile. I felt so dead inside, no matter who it was or where we were, I just felt nothing and wanted to leave. Honestly I’m really glad this month is over because I doubt I could stand another blind date like that.”
“What’d you do? On the dates I mean.”
“I dunno…stuff. Whatever she wanted. Shopping, restaurants, movies, whatever. Just dates, nothing serious.”
“And you’re telling me you didn’t enjoy yourself at all? Not even a little?”
“Nope.” Yami shook his head. “Honestly Yugi, I counted the seconds till I could get away.”
“Wow. But you like movies and shopping…well, shopping for cards anyway…but still!”
“You don’t understand-“
“And we go do that stuff together all the time and you always have fun.” Yugi sounded confused.
“That’s just it.”
“What’s it?! Yami, you’re not making any sense. First you said you didn’t enjoy yourself, then you admit it was all stuff you liked, and now you’re saying that it IS stuff you like and that’s the reason you were miserable.” Yugi was frustrated. “Did you hate the people that much that you couldn’t even enjoy yourself a little?”
“No, I didn’t hate them.” Yami replied quickly. “I never said that.”
“Then what was the problem?”
“I told you, I just didn’t…feel anything at all for them. I told you, they couldn’t make me smile…and it just wasn’t worth it to be there and not be able to smile.”
“You always smile when we hang out at those places.” Yugi said quietly.
“…I know.” Yami replied, just as quietly.
Yugi was looking at him oddly. Yami looked very hard at the ground, able to feel Yugi’s gaze burning into him.
They were in front of his apartment now. Finally Yami glanced at the smaller boy. “Well…see you.” he said, reaching for the door.
“Yeah…see you.” Yugi replied a little distractedly, waved, and started to walk back toward his own home. Yami watched him for a moment and then went inside and collapsed against the door after he shut it, closing his eyes.
I know I always smile when we’re together. That’s just it. He slid down to sit on the floor and hid his face in his hands. He’d always known, deep down inside, and the twenty-eight random dates in the last month had only proven it more. He had tried as hard as he could. He’d made the bet with Joey to try and convince himself that there had to be someone else he could feel this way about. He’d given himself every chance to change his feelings, but they never changed. He sighed.
It’s just that you’re the only person I want to smile for.
