Disclaimer: Let's just get to the fic, okay? ^^

Poised on the threshold between two worlds, Yami suddenly felt something pull himself back. Not a physical something, just a feeling deep down inside that made him stop where he was, and made him turn.

And after he’d sworn he wouldn’t look back.

His whole life had led to this moment, he’d fought everything in his path to make it here. And now that he was here, staring into the long-lost faces of his family and the friends he’d left 5000 years before, now suddenly he turned back to look at the faces of the new friends and family he’d made. As he cast his eyes over them, his gaze automatically went to Yugi.

This was why he’d sworn not to look back, because he feared seeing the look on Yugi’s face that was there now. A painful fake smile and cheeks splashed with tears, and eyes that were neither convincing nor comforting.

He looked back at the other side. Everyone he’d lost so many years before, waiting to welcome him home to the place his spirit belonged. He’d fought for this moment. He’d waited, hoped, even looked forward to this moment. The moment that he knew Yugi was strong enough to move ahead, and the moment he himself could go home. And now it was here.

Except right now something was telling him it was all wrong. Everything he’d worked so hard for, all of it was suddenly so very very wrong.

Yugi doesn’t need me. These people were never meant to stay with me, they were here to guide me while they could, to get to this place, he told himself. And now it’s time to let go.

That’s right, this place, wasn’t that what they’d all fought for? Who was he to turn his back on all that effort and all that pain now? And to turn his back on his family, his friends, his whole past, the people that he’d once loved and had been absent from for so long. They’d looked forward to this day too. To doubt it all now, he’d be letting down everyone and everything.

His eyes sought Yugi’s again. One last look, he promised himself. Except that the last look wasn’t the look he wanted. He wanted to see Yugi smiling for real and happy to see him go home. He didn’t want to see this fake cheerfulness and these tears.

As he met his eyes he saw Yugi’s lips move the slightest. Even from here Yugi’s silent words seemed loud and clear in Yami’s ears. He could still hear Yugi’s voice at this moment, even as they were separate people saying good-bye. Their hearts were still bound, and Yugi had whispered a final message to him. And Yugi’s words changed everything.

He would lose his glory, lose his chance to reunite with the people he’d once loved, lose his honor even for backing down and throwing away all the efforts of the people that had helped him. But none of that mattered as Yami turned away from the door. He saw no one else, the faces of his friends were blurs in his vision. He looked only into Yugi’s face and thought of nothing more as he walked over to him, put his arms around him, and held him close. The doorway behind him slowly closed and sealed with a muffled bang. It wouldn't open again. Yami never even noticed.

He couldn’t leave now, he couldn't leave ever. Yugi still needed him. Not for strength, not for protection, but for something new. And Yami still needed him for the same thing.

“I love you too,” he whispered, looking deep into Yugi’s eyes.

Yugi stared back and then smiled, a real smile, and embraced Yami back, hands grasping his shoulders and holding onto him as if he would never ever let go again.

“Thank you,” Yugi whispered, his head on Yami’s chest. “Thank you, Yami.”

And Yami knew at that second that just this moment alone was worth everything he’d given up.
