IMHO, if it was my duty to get presents for everybody at $3.00 (is that the absolute budget - not $4.00?) per present, i'd probably do a starbucks gift card as it is so popular in america so nice for them to have...and good to drink.... it'd also make for a fun field trip :)

also on 1) don't talk to them like they're kids. i'm sure you can remember high school but it is pretty condescending to talk to a teenager as if they're a child. i don't really think you'd do it personally, but i thought i would mention it.
3) you were in japan, you should know what kids thing the all the hot spots and big deal is in america!! what did kids always ask you about? i think this has more to do with the excitement of being in a new country rather than "what do teenagers like to do". any bit of culture you can impart would probably go well.
i suggest watching gossip girl and community with them because that is american life~~
