A recap of my thoughts throughout the past 45 seconds of my life:

"Ooh... interesting post. Let's read this. Uh huh. Mmm hmm. Yep. Makes sense. Yeah. Good point.

Hmm, yeah. Good post.

Oh, look. 1 comment. Wonder who it's from.

Could it be from...?

No, it couldn't be.

Oh, it is. Whoa.

Irony. I like that."

Rewarding excellence? satireblank July 1 2008, 03:51:08 UTC
Must be tough for TDs... hear complaints if they move money up, but they are not rewarding excellence if they pay out more in lower divisions.

from talking with a director, I gained some insight into a pretty good solution: higher entries with higher divisions gives the ILLUSION of rewarding excellence (the number is higher for winner of div. 1 than div. 2) while giving everyone no reasons to complain.

yeah, that's how a lot of tourneys work that I've been in, but it just doesn't play out when D1 has almost half the number of people as D2. I would totally rather part of my entry fee be applied at least a little to D1 than the tourney pay out 8 or 9 places with 6 different word prizes, but that's just me. I guess because I aspire to that level, I would like to think that someday that would be rewarded. I know there are plenty of lifetime middle division player who could care less, but that just seems greedy.

Oh, I agree completely, I would love for everybody to have the same mentality as you. Since division 6, I've always thought the top "should" get more prizes in a tournament. The division structure is set up so that everyone else doesn't have to get routinely whupped by the top, thus the top should earn more prize money. The only real logic against that is that the lower divisions don't have the OPTION of competing for those higher prizes. Thus unlimited play-up tournaments.

But yeah, at least the winner of div. 6 nationals isn't making as much as the div. 1 winner yet. When money gets thrown at us like for nationals, thankfully it goes where it is most deserved.

A few things... ididjonassalk July 1 2008, 04:14:12 UTC
1. Obviously it's because Div. B was twice as big. Carol's one-dayers also pay the same amount for first and second, regardless of divisions; she's one with an egalitarian prize structure.

2. Stocky specifically asked Evan at dinner if he was upset over that fact; Evan said he didn't mind at all.

3. Kenji's famous for, when he won Div. A of BAT and won more than the winner of premier, gave part of his winnings to the premier winner. I'm sure Evan wouldn't mind. How much do you love cash?

In short, I don't know if I'd call it "wrong." Can I punt and say it's not right without saying "wrong"?

I'm certainly not criticizing Carol for making that decision. I know why she does that, I am just saying that as someone who was in that position it feels weird. Evan never got an easy game, where as I was rich with them. It's like paying the guy who holds the shovel more than the guy who's digging the hole.

Fair enough. I was more just expressing my own discomfort with the situation. Had a known the difference beforehand, I probably would have talked to Carol about diverting my winnings up to the first division. Obviously no one is in it for the money, but it is nice to be rewarded for being the best guy in the room. I was not that guy (by any stretch). Glad you have such perspective about it, you are obviously a classy guy.
