Good grief. I have a number of friends who are teachers, and the stupidity of school officials around the country boggles my mind. Who put these jerks in charge of our children's teachers? I agree with you that they are definitely JERKS.

I am thoroughly ticked off on behalf of the friends who spent two weeks in utter panic. :P

I also suspect it is a way to get around clauses they do not like in the labour agreement. Like forcing someone into a lower paying job, a relocation, or a change in position.

Or the more simple, lets try to get as many to go away and get other jobs so they can be replaced with cheaper new hires.

Well, change in position, yes, but you can't get someone into a lower-paying job (statewide salary schedule based on education and years of experience). The new hires aren't even all that much cheaper, since the bulk of the money the district pays (as opposed to our salaries, which the state pays) is in benefits, which would be the same for everyone.

I think it's mostly getting rid of people they didn't want. :P

Politics....the bane of education.

No friggin' kidding. :P I think every elected official should be forced to spend two weeks following a teacher. Two weeks, getting up to going to bed--every meeting, every bit of planning/copying/etc., every after-school time that's unpaid. Everything. And get paid the same amount, too.

Was Charmee one of the ones offered a new position?

Offered her old position back, which is even better! Most people got their old jobs back, though there are a few who ended up in really weird stuff--the high school teacher who was rehired to teach elementary-level ELL, the high-school math teacher who was rehired to teach SpEd (he hasn't taught SpEd in 12 years).... *rolls eyes*

So there's a meeting coming up next week, probably to vote on whether to strike at the end of August if we don't have a good contract.

Epic fail. :P I'm SO grateful I wasn't part of those who got RIFfed!
