I think I'm a little bit depressed.

Work's the problem. Kind of. I don't want to be there right now. I don't want to spend my life repeating myself ad nauseum so that half the kids can ignore me and only a third can turn in their work. Have you considered teaching privately instead of in the public schools? I went to public schools all my life until college, and they've changed a lot.

I remember the teachers in our district would occasionally have work actions that were called 'work to the rule' days-short of a strike, but enough to get the point across that it's pretty much demanded of teachers that they do a lot of unpaid extra work just to get their daily business done, never mind spending extra time on professional development and the like.

Teachers are grossly underpaid and underrespected. A lot of that, sadly, can be chalked up to teaching being perceived as a female-dominated occupation (after the manner of, say, nursing). Women are expected by society as a whole to do a ton of unpaid labor that is both essential to the continuing function of society and on the other hand dismissed as not being "real" work because they don't earn any pay for it. The hours and hours of work teachers have to do outside the classroom is one such example ( ... )

No, it is not too much to ask. It is one of the reasons I teach at the university level. Although we face a lot of the same problems, I think it's less serious - we certainly don't have to put in the same amount of "face time" in front of the class that you do. And the pay is rather better. Although we put in a lot of unpaid time as well (like all that summer committee work on a 9-month salary - grrr ( ... )
