Kris yawned and muttered, "Yeah, okay," and batted at whoever was trying to wake him up. His hand landed on something soft and fuzzy, and there was a warm snort of breath against his skin. He opened his eyes and stared up at the unicorn peering down at him curiously through thick-fringed blue eyes.

The unicorn whiffled at him again, approving that he was awake, and nudged him meaningfully.

"Uh, I'm not," Kris said. "I mean, really, I'm not."

The unicorn didn't seem convinced, and also it didn't seem like it was going away anytime soon. Kris pushed himself up against the tree, looking around helplessly. "But-" he said, and then he peered at the unicorn more closely-it was a little hard to make out, because the unicorn was all silky black, except for the streaks of violet and turquoise in its mane, but-"Oh, huh," Kris said. It was a boy unicorn.

"Well, I guess I am for that," Kris said, dubiously. He wasn't sure that counted, but at the ( ... )
